Kevin Langhauser went 4-for-4 with a double and a triple while classmate
Derek Zaleski pitched seven innings to earn his first win of the season as the Gettysburg College baseball team won its seventh game in a row, topping Penn State-York 8-1 Friday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.
The Bullets (8-4) are now on their longest winning streak since an eight-gamer that overlapped the 2006 and 2007 seasons. It is Gettysburg's longest winning streak in one season since the 1998 Bullets won eight straight.
For the second game in a row, Gettysburg never trailed after scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Leading 3-1 after three innings, the Bullets pulled away with a two-run fourth and a three-run fifth.
Sophomore Clint O'Brien went 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases for the Bullets while Langhauser also had two runs and two RBIs. He is now hitting a blistering .491 for the season.
Zaleski held the Lions, who were playing their season opener, to one run on six hits and three walks while striking out seven – two shy of his career-high. Freshman
John Donovan blanked York on one hit and one walk over the final two innings. He fanned two.
Starter Dan Rogers threw the first four innings and was charged with the loss for the Lions, giving up six runs on seven hits and four walks.
Collin Wallace led York at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double.
After scoring twice in the first, the Lions threatened in the second when
Ryan Taylor doubled in a run with two outs. However, the inning came to a close when third baseman
Mike Backus took a relay throw from left and threw out a runner trying to score from first.
York loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third, but Zaleski got out of it with a strikeout and a groundout.
The Bullets went back up by two in the bottom of the inning, when Langhauser led off with a double and scored his second run of the game on a single from Backus, who knocked in the 108th run of his career. He is now just two shy of the school record held by Joe Bonyai '07.
In the fourth, Gettysburg received an RBI-single from junior
Cory Jackmuff and a run-scoring triple from Langhauser to go ahead 5-1. O'Brien and Langhauser each singled in runs in the sixth, when junior
Chris Simard also scored on a double steal.
Gettysburg continues its homestand on Saturday, when it hosts Oneonta State in a non-conference doubleheader starting at noon.
