ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg bats came alive too late to earn a victory in a 5-4 opening-game loss at Lebanon Valley College, but the Bullets salvaged a split and ended the Dutchmen's eight-game winning streak with a 6-5 extra-inning victory in the nightcap of the teams' non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday.

Lebanon Valley (12-4) came into Wednesday's affair with wins in its last seven games thanks in large part to its pitching, which had allowed only three earned runs during the streak. The trend continued early in game one as Laura Snyder held Gettysburg (9-6-1) scoreless through the first five frames.

The Dutchmen plated runs from the third to fifth innings with a sacrifice fly by Allie Davies giving the hosts a 5-0 advantage heading into the sixth.

Gettysburg finally cracked the scoring column as senior pitcher Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) connected on her first home run of the spring to lead off the inning. She turned around in the bottom half of the sixth and worked out of a jam, stranding Lebanon Valley runners on second and third and keeping the door open for a Bullet comeback.

Freshman Joy Hallfors (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) started the rally with a lead-off single and later came around to score on a single up the middle by senior Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy). With runners on first and second, sophomore Catrina DelGais (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) pulled the visitors to a run with a double to left center to plate two more runs and set herself up as the game-tying run on second with only one out. The comeback bid came up short, however, as Snyder closed the door with a pair of pop-ups.

McCullough took the loss to drop to 3-5 on the year, while Snyder improved to 5-1.

In game two, both teams struck early with three runs in their opening at bats. Each of Gettysburg's first four hitters reached base with Woodbury knocking in a run with a ground out and freshman Sam Bader (York, Pa./Central York) driving in two more with a single to right.

Lebanon Valley answered in the home half as Meghan Donoghue led off with a homer to left-center. Kristen Uhas followed two batters later with a triple to plate another run and later scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Bullets took a 4-3 lead in the third as sophomore Adrienne Rahs (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) and Woodbury hit back-to-back doubles.

No more runs went on the board until the bottom of the seventh when Donoghue led off with a double and came around to score the game-tying tally on a single by Uhas. The Dutchmen had runners on second and third with no outs, but Gettysburg hurler Lanie Parr (Washington, D.C./Academy of the Holy Cross) managed to get out of the inning with a strikeout, ground-out, and fly-out.

In the top half of the eighth, the Bullets took quick advantage of the international tiebreaker as DelGais doubled home the runner placed on second to start the inning. McCullough hit into a fielder's choice to drive in another run and put Gettysburg up 6-4.

Lebanon Valley also brought home the placed runner in the bottom half of the frame, but couldn't get another base runner on.

Parr improved to 5-1 with the win. She allowed five runs (three earned) on 11 hits while striking out five. Hallfors posted a pair of hits in the nightcap and finished 3-for-8 with two runs in the series. Woodbury finished 2-for-5 with three walks and three RBIs and DelGais posted two RBIs in the two games.

Gettysburg resumes Centennial Conference play this weekend with a road trip to Haverford College on Saturday, March 27. The first game of the doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. start.
