Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. – Junior Matt Karis tossed his second complete-game victory of the season, throwing a seven-hitter as the Gettysburg College baseball team picked up its first Centennial Conference victory of the season, topping Dickinson College 9-3 Wednesday afternoon.

The Bullets (9-9, 1-3 CC), who snapped a five-game losing streak, scored all of their runs over their final five innings after falling behind 2-0 in the third.

Karis (3-2), who did not allow an earned run, was particularly effective over the last four innings, when he allowed just one hit. He walked one, struck out three, and gave up just one extra-base hit for the game.

The Red Devils (4-14, 1-4 CC) got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the third on two hits, two errors, and a walk. In the meantime, Dickinson starter Evan Fitzpatrick blanked Gettysburg on one walk and two hits over the first four innings before the Bullets broke through in the fifth.

Senior catcher Craig Barrows and sophomore second baseman Augie Stadtmueller got things started with back-to-back singles leading off the inning before senior first baseman Cory Beddick drew a walk. An RBI-fielder's choice from senior outfielder Kevin Langhauser and a run-scoring groundout from junior outfielder Cam Riera drove in a pair of runs before a third run crossed the plate on an error, putting the Bullets up 3-1.

The visitors pushed their advantage to 5-1 after plating two runs in the sixth. Gettysburg had just one hit in the inning, but sophomore outfielder Drew Roy scored on a passed and Barrows swiped home on a double steal.

Dickinson scored its final run in the sixth on two errors and a sacrifice fly. The Bullets added four insurance runs over the final three innings, with Riera roping a leadoff double before scoring in the seventh. Beddick and Karis each had RBI-singles over the final two innings.

Beddick and senior third baseman Mike Backus cracked two hits apiece for the Bullets while Riera and Barrows each scored a pair of runs. Karis finished with two RBIs.

Fitzpatrick (2-3) left the game after six innings, yielding five runs on three hits and five walks while striking out eight. Freshman Justin Williams hurled the final three frames and surrendered four runs (two earned) on six hits.

Ben Sciambi and Andrew Sterling had two hits each for Dickinson.

The Bullets and Red Devils complete their season series on Friday at Gettysburg with another nine-inning game starting at 3:30 p.m.
