Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Matt Karis tossed his first collegiate shutout, firing a two-hitter while aiding his cause with a solo home run as the Gettysburg College baseball team defeated McDaniel College 7-0 in a rain and lightning-shortened game Friday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.

Karis (4-3), who worked his eighth career complete game, struck out five and did not walk a batter. He was touched for only a pair of singles, including an infield hit.

Gettysburg swept the season series from the Green Terror after winning 8-1 in Westminster on Wednesday.

The game lasted just one hour and 17 minutes but included an hour and 15-minute lightning delay. It was delayed again at the end of the sixth due to rain and more lightning before the game was called around a half hour later.

Junior Cam Riera also went deep for the Bullets (13-15, 5-9 CC), cracking his first collegiate homer while finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs. His long ball – a two-run shot to right in the fourth – gave his team a 4-0 lead and put him at 99 hits for his career.

Junior Chris Simard went 2-for-3 with a pair of his runs to go with his first collegiate triple while sophomore Eric Williams was 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Senior Kevin Langhauser scored two runs while classmate Mike Backus tied a school record for doubles with the 39th two-bagger of his career.

Brian Rosato (1-5) threw all six innings and suffered the loss for McDaniel (7-15, 3-11 CC).

Langhauser led off the bottom of the first with a triple before scoring on a Riera single one batter later. Then with the leadoff batter at the plate in the top of the second, the game was halted when lightning was detected. When play resumed, Karis retired the Terror in order before Gettysburg made it 2-0 in the bottom of the inning. Simard legged out the Bullets second straight leadoff triple and scored on a Williams sacrifice fly.

Gettysburg broke it open with a four-run third on Riera's two-run shot, Karis' solo blast to center, and an RBI-double from Williams.

The Bullets tacked on a run in the fifth, when Backus led off with a double and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly from senior Craig Barrows.

Gettysburg continues Centennial Conference play on Saturday, when it visits Haverford College in a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
