GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Adrienne Rahs (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) posted a two-run double and scored twice help the Gettysburg College softball team hand visiting Ursinus College its first Centennial Conference loss of the year 6-2 on Saturday. The Bullets were unable to complete the sweep, falling 4-0 in the nightcap.
Gettysburg (17-12-1, 9-5 CC) halted Ursinus' (21-3, 11-1 CC) 12-game winning streak in the opener as Rahs, senior
Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's Academy), and freshman
Lindsey Peragallo (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) each went 2-for-3 and sophomore
Lanie Parr (Washington, D.C./Academy of the Holy Cross) struck out six on the mound.
Ursinus struck first in the game with a two-out run-scoring single by Kelly Kalovcak in the first inning. Gettysburg went quietly in its first two at bats against Bear ace Lauren Davis-Macedonia before breaking out in the third frame. Back-to-back singles by Peragallo and
Joy Hallfors (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) followed by Rahs' double put the hosts in front. Woodbury followed with a single to score Rahs and give Gettysburg a 3-1 advantage after three.
The visitors put runners on second and third with one out in the fourth inning before Parr took over and struck out Amy Gentile and Emelie McFarland to end the threat. The Bullet pitcher helped her cause on the mound with a two-run single in the sixth and Peragallo added a run-scoring single to put Gettysburg up 6-1.
Kalovcak brought home Ursinus' final run in the seven with a double before Peragallo ended the game with a diving catch in right field.
After posting six runs and nine hits against Davis-Macedonia, Gettysburg was shut down in the nightcap against No. 2 starter Jennilyn Weber. The Bullets had runners on the bases in every inning, but couldn't convert as Weber allowed only five hits and one walk, while striking out two.
Ursinus was also shut down by Bullet starter
Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) until the fourth inning when lead-off hitter Kelli Jerdan blasted a skyscraping home run over the scoreboard in left field. The Bears added two more runs in the fifth courtesy of some fielding miscues by the hosts and one more in the sixth to set the score.
McCullough allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, while striking out seven. Freshman
Katie Lang (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) went 2-for-3 at the plate for Gettysburg.
Gettysburg will take a break from its conference schedule to travel to 10th-ranked Salisbury University on Wednesday, April 21, at 3:30 p.m.
