GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College softball team completed an improbable comeback Thursday evening against Hood College as sophomore
Adrienne Rahs (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) smashed a two-out, two-run double off the fence in left to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to push the Bullets past the Blazers 10-9 and complete a non-conference sweep.
Gettysburg (19-12-1) trailed 8-0 in the nightcap heading into the bottom of the fifth inning and was just one out away from a loss as the first two batters were retired. After a walk to junior
Megan Lott (Bellsville, Md./Pallotti), Rahs smashed a line drive that tipped the edge of the third baseman's glove and caromed into foul territory, allowing both Bullet base runners to advance into scoring position. Senior
Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's Academy) doubled in both runners with a blast to right field and then was brought home on another two-bagger by sophomore
Catrina DelGais (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern), cutting Hood's lead to 8-3.
The Bullet bats continued to swing in the bottom of the sixth, bringing across two more runs on a double to the center-field fence by Lott and a sacrifice fly to left by Rahs.
Hood (15-21) added to their advantage with a run in the seventh as lead-off hitter Kelly Gafner drilled a triple to right and came around to score on a ground out, setting the score at 9-5 and putting the Bullets on the brink.
After a ground out to start the frame, the Bullets tallied three consecutive singles to load the bases. The lead runner was eliminated on a fielder's choice, putting two outs on the board with the hosts still trailing 9-5.
Freshman
Joy Hallfors (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) connected on a ball up the middle that the second baseman couldn't handle, plating Gettysburg's first run. Lott followed up with a single to right to score two more and cut the margin to just one.
Rahs worked the count to 2-2 before fouling off an inside pitch. Hood pitcher Jordan Wolford again attacked the inside part of the plate, but this time the Bullet sophomore was waiting, drilling the ball to the left-field corner and off the top-half of the fence. The ball bounced away from the left fielder, allowing Lott to score all the way from first with the game-winning run.
Hood took the lead initially with a run-scoring single by Wolford in the opening frame. The Blazers tuned up the bats in the fifth, sending 12 batters to the dish and getting seven runs on nine hits, including eight consecutive base knocks to start the frame. Brittni Jones provided the big blast with a bases-clearing double just shy of the fence.
Gettysburg substituted freshman
Taylor Snyder (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) on the mound and she closed Hoods' fifth inning with a strikeout. She ended up picking the win after working the final 2 1/3 innings and allowing just one run on one hit with two strikeouts.
Rahs went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Lott finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Senior
Kara Kempski (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) was perfect in four trips to the plate, posting three hits and one walk. Freshman
Sam Bader (York, Pa./Central York) also added a pair of hits.
Game one was not quite as dramatic as the finale as Gettysburg brought across four runs in the opening inning en route to a 6-1 decision. Hallfors and Lott kick-started the attack with back-to-back singles and both came around to score on a single by Woodbury. Kempski added a run-scoring single and sophomore pitcher
Lanie Parr (Washington, D.C./Academy of the Holy Cross) aided her cause on the mound with an RBI on a fielder's choice.
Kandie Glenn put Hood on the board with a home run to left field in the top of the third. Parr added to Gettysburg's advantage with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame and DelGais capped the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth.
Parr improved to 11-3 this season by holding the Blazers to just two hits while striking out five. Lott finished 3-for-3 with two runs and DelGais and Kempski each added two hits.
Gettysburg closes its Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, April 24, at McDaniel College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
