SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Freshman
Ryan Taylor held host Susquehanna University to two runs over seven innings, but Gettysburg was limited to a season-low scoring total in a 2-1 non-conference loss in the Bullets 2010 season finale Wednesday afternoon.
The Crusaders (18-17) received 8 2/3 innings of six-hit ball from Matt Boyd before Ben Leonard came on to get the final out for his fifth save of the year.
Senior
Mike Backus went 2-for-4 for the Bullets to finish his career with 181, which ties him with Mike Luteran '04 for third in school history. Backus also finishes first all-time at Gettysburg in RBIs (128), doubles (42), and home runs (17) and second in runs scored (114).
Gettysburg (15-21) was held to its lowest run production since it was shut out 10-0 by Ursinus College on April 25 of last season.
Susquehanna went ahead 1-0 in the second when Nick Ferlise led off with a double, moved to third on a single, and scored during a pickoff between first and second.
The Crusaders put two more runners on base in the third with a pair of singles, but Taylor would settle in and retire and nine in a row. In the meantime, the Bullets plated their only run when senior
Craig Barrows the fourth off with a single, advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, and scored on a two-out single from senior
Cory Beddick.
It was a 1-1 game heading into the sixth when Susquehanna used some two-out lightning to push across the game-winning run. With two down, Chris Price and Ferlise roped back-to-back singles before No. 5 hitter Don Kirkland brought in the go-ahead run with a double.
Taylor escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh before giving way to sophomore Michael Odierna (Weston, Conn./Weston), who fanned the side in the eighth.
Boyd was one out away from a complete game when sophomore
Drew Roy got on with a walk. Leonard then came into the game and uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Roy to move into scoring position before inducing a game-ending flyout.
Boyd (1-1) finished with two walks and three strikeouts while Taylor (5-4) scattered eight hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts. The loss snapped his four-game winning streak, as he was charged with his first loss since March 27 against Muhlenberg.
Freshman
Pat Cody singled to end the year on an 11-game hitting streak. In 15 starts and 66 at-bats, Cody hit .470 for the season.
