CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Senior third baseman Mike Backus went 5-for-9, tied a school record, and reached a milestone as the Gettysburg College baseball team split a Centennial Conference doubleheader at Washington (Md.) College on Saturday.

The Bullets (10-11, 2-5 CC) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win the opener 14-7 but Washington did the same in a 10-5 victory in the nightcap.

Backus scored four runs, giving him exactly 100 for his career. He becomes just the third player in school history to reach 100 runs, hits, and RBIs, joining Joe Bonyai '07 and Joe Cordova '97. He also homered in the second game to tie Gettysburg's career home runs record of 13 held by John Woods '00.

Junior first baseman Matt Karis also had a big day at the plate, finishing 4-for-9 while senior outfielder Kevin Langhauser went 3-for-8 with four runs, five RBIs with a double, triple, and home run.

John Rolewicz went 5-for-7 with four runs for Washington (10-7, 5-3 CC), which snapped a five-game losing streak to Gettysburg, while Ryan Normoyle had five RBIs.

In the opener, the Bullets trailed 4-0 after two innings but broke out with 10 runs over the third and fourth innings to go up 10-4. Langhauser belted a two-run homer in a three-run third, and he and junior shortstop Chris Simard drilled back-to-back two-run doubles in a six-run fourth.

The Shoremen closed to within 10-7 after a three-run double from Matt Boucher in the third, but freshman reliever Ryan Taylor blanked Washington over the final 3 2/3 innings in relief of junior Kyle Conklin to earn the win. Taylor (2-3) allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out three.

The Bullets clouted six extra-base hits in the opener, tying their season high. Langhauser finished 2-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs while Simard was 2-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs. Backus went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and sophomore second baseman Augie Stadtmueller scored three runs.

Sean Connole was 3-for-4 in Game 1 for Washington. Starter Kyle Aldrich was charged with the loss after throwing three innings.

Gettysburg jumped on Shoreman starter Joe Kearney-Argow with four runs on seven hits over the first three innings in the nightcap. Washington tied it against freshman starter Will Patterson with a four-run third, highlighted by a three-run homer from Normoyle.

Backus drilled his record-tying homer in the top of the fifth to make it 5-4, but Kearney-Argow and reliever Chris Keiper shut out the Bullets over the final four innings. Kearney-Argow (2-0) went 6 2/3 before Keiper came on to throw the final 2 1/3 to earn his fourth save of the year. He gave up just one hit and struck out four.

The Shoremen put the game out of reach by scoring six runs from the sixth through the eighth innings.

Patterson (1-1) was charged with the loss after yielding six runs over five innings. Freshman John Donovan also threw 2 2/3 for the Bullets, allowing four runs.

Backus was 3-for-5 with two runs in the nightcap while Karis finished 3-for-5. Junior Cam Riera went 2-for-5.

Rolewicz and Aldrich each had three hits for the Shoremen, who banged out 15 hits.

Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Tuesday, when it hosts Franklin & Marshall College at 3:30 p.m. in another Centennial Conference affair.
