GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Dickinson College handed Gettysburg College its first doubleheader loss of the season with a pair of hard-earned victories at Bobby Jones Field on Tuesday, April 6.
Dickinson (11-12, 4-2 CC) scored a run in its final four plate appearances to edge Gettysburg (12-11-1, 4-4 CC) 4-2 in the opening game. In the nightcap, the Red Devils regained the lead with three runs in the second inning and pitcher Allison Jordan retired the final 19 Bullets she faced en route to a 6-3 decision.
Game one opened quietly with neither team putting across a run until the fourth inning. Alesha Sisco scored Dickinson's first tally after posting a double and coming around to score on an error, while Gettysburg answered in the bottom half with a run-scoring single by junior
Caitlin Bay (Flemington, N.J./Immaculata).
The Red Devils jumped ahead in the top of the fifth as Erin King fought back from a 0-2 count to smash a triple to the right-field fence, scoring Kyrie Budick all the way from first. The visitors tallied another run early in the sixth to jump ahead 3-1.
Gettysburg cut the lead to a run in the bottom of the sixth as senior
Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) blooped a two-out single over the shortstop's head to score classmate
Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's Academy) from second.
Dickinson tacked on some insurance in the seventh as Sisco capped a 4-for-4 effort at the plate with a RBI single through the left side. Liz Barry retired the Bullets 1-2-3 in the seventh to earn the victory.
McCullough took the loss after allowing 10 hits and four runs (three earned), while striking out seven.
The second game started out as a high-scoring affair as the Red Devils put two on the board in the top of the first and the Bullets answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior
Kara Kempski (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) provided the big blow with a two-run double to left field.
Dickinson returned the favor in the top of the second with three runs, capped by a two-run double to left-center by Emma Murtaugh. The Devils added another run in the third frame and Jordan went to work on the mound, keeping the hosts off the bases the rest of the way.
Sophomore
Lanie Parr (Washington, D.C./Academy of the Holy Cross) picked up the loss for the Bullets after allowing 10 hits and six runs, only two of which were earned.
