COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College softball team fell short of its bid for a conference title as the Bullets dropped a pair of decisions on the opening day of the double-elimination Centennial Conference Tournament hosted by Ursinus College.
Gettysburg (21-16-1) managed only five hits in a 4-0 opening-game loss to Swarthmore College (20-22) before ending the day with a 3-1 setback at the hands of Ursinus (28-6). Sophomore
Adrienne Rahs (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) posted four of the Bullets' nine hits on the day.
Gettysburg appeared to be on the verge of striking early against Swarthmore as sophomore
Catrina DelGais (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) singled to lead off the second and advanced to second base on a sacrifice. After Garnet hurler Kathryn Riley posted a strikeout, freshman
Sam Bader (York, Pa./Central York) knocked an infield single to advance DelGais to third. That would be the extent of the threat as Riley posted another strikeout to end the inning.
Swarthmore picked up the game's first run in the top of the fourth when Krista Scheirer knocked a run-scoring single through the right side with two outs. The Garnet added more insurance in the fifth inning as Kate Smayda tripled home two more and then scored on a single by Riley.
Rahs was the only Bullet hitter to post a base knock over the final five innings, lacing a double in the third and singling in the sixth. She was stranded each time as Riley posted seven of her 10 strikeouts during that time frame.
Senior
Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out four. Her second strikeout to cap the second inning made her just the second Bullet to fan 400 batters in a career.
After handing Ursinus its only conference loss in the regular season, the hosts ended Gettysburg's tournament run later Saturday afternoon. The Bullets managed only one hit against starter Lauren Davis-Macedonia through the first five innings – a two-out single by junior
Caitlin Bay (Flemington, N.J./Immaculata) in the third inning.
The Bears brought home the game's first run via an error in their third at bat. Allison Pfrommer reached on a miscue to start the frame and eventually made her way to third where she scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelli Jerdan. Ursinus added an insurance run in the top of the six with back-to-back-to-back singles, the last by Pfrommer giving the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Gettysburg turned in its first run of the day in the sixth as McCullough led off with a double to center field. After advancing to third on a sacrifice, McCullough touched home plate on a ground out by freshman
Lindsey Peragallo (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) to cut the deficit to one.
The Bears answered in their next at bat with a two-out run-scoring single by Amy Gentile to regain a two-run lead. The Bullets put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the seventh after a lead-off double by Rahs and a two-out single by DelGais, but a pair of pop-ups to second base squashed the comeback.
Davis-Macedonia held Gettysburg to just four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Sophomore
Lanie Parr (Washington, D.C./Academy of the Holy Cross) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on 10 hits and a walk.
