Eagles, Mighty Macs Fall to Bullets

Gettysburg back on track with wins at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team picked up a pair of victories on the opening day of the Elizabethtown College Days Inn Blue Jay Classic, surviving a five-set duel with the University of Mary Washington and sweeping Immaculata University.

Gettysburg (7-9) held a block party in taking down Mary Washington (11-4) 3-2 (20-25, 27-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-13) posting eight solos and 18 assists for 17 total blocks, marking the Bullets' highest block total since posting the same number against Shippensburg University one day short of exactly eight years ago on Sept. 25, 2002.

Leading the way for the Orange and Blue was senior Nicole Burns (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro) with nine total blocks to go with 10 kills. Freshman Sarah Gorski (Darien, Conn./Darien) posted seven blocks and tied for the team lead with 10 kills. Sophomore Jamie Huffman (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) notched five blocks and freshman Courtney Cyr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) added four stops, six kills, and four service aces. Senior Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) logged seven kills and one block assist.

Freshman setter Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) dished out 31 assists, while also recording five kills, four aces, and 11 digs. Junior Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) led the defense with 17 digs and sophomore Katie Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Covenant Life) put up 16 digs.

Gettysburg had far less trouble with Immaculata (2-8), sweeping the Might Macs 25-16, 25-12, and 25-11. Freshman Kelly Milione (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) led a balanced attacking effort with nine kills with no errors in 14 attempts. Yoder added seven kills with a pair of blocks and Burns posted six kills on nine attempts. Kuhn handed out 23 helpers and Huffman paced the defense with eight digs.

The Bullets turn around tomorrow with two more matches against Catholic University (6-6) at noon and against Elizabethtown (10-3) at 2 p.m.
