ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Most Valuable Player
Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) put up a combined 45 digs in two victories as Gettysburg claimed the championship at the Elizabethtown College Days Inn Blue Jay Classic.
Gettysburg (9-9) swept Catholic (7-7) 25-17, 25-21, and 25-23 to start the day and set up a finale with host Elizabethtown (10-5). The Bullets stumbled only once in a four-set win, taking down the Blue Jays and the tournament title with scores of 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, and 25-19. Rubenstein was tabbed MVP after totaling 69 digs in four weekend matches, including 25 against Elizabethtown. Senior
Nicole Burns (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro) was named to the Blue Jay Classic All-Tournament Team after dominating net play on day two with 22 kills and 17 total blocks.
The Bullets dispatched Catholic quickly as freshmen
Sarah Gorski (Darien, Conn./Darien) and
Courtney Cyr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) each pounded down 10 kills, with the former adding five total blocks. Burns posted nine kills and senior
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) totaled eight kills. Both Cyr and Yoder led the service game with three aces.
Freshman setter
Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) notched a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs. Rubenstein paced the defense with 20 digs.
After posting 17 blocks against the University of Mary Washington yesterday, Gettysburg's frontline defense was even more impressive against Elizabethtown with 26 total blocks and twice as many kills. Burns led the way in both categories with 13 kills and 15 total blocks. Yoder posted a rare triple-double with 11 kills, 10 digs, and 10 total blocks, while Cyr notched 10 kills and six total blocks.
Junior
Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) and Gorski each just missed double-doubles, the former posting eight kills and 11 digs and the latter tallying nine kills and seven blocks. Kuhn established a new personal mark by handing out 47 assists.
Gettysburg resumes its Centennial Conference schedule at preseason favorite Franklin & Marshall College on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m.
