GETTYSBURG, Pa. – After cruising through its first three matches at the Battlefield Classic, the Gettysburg College volleyball team ran into a determined and talented squad from Salisbury University on Saturday and came out on the wrong end of a sweep.
Gettysburg (3-1) opened the day with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 16-25, 25-21) decision over Widener University (1-3) before Salisbury (4-0) crashed the Bullets' party. The Sea Gulls won handily 25-9, 25-22, and 25-19. Junior libero
Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) and freshman setter
Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) were each named to the all-tournament team for the hosts.
Gettysburg pounded out 55 kills in its four-set victory over Widener with three players hitting 11 or more. Senior
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and junior
Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) each went for a dozen kills and freshman
Courtney Cyr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) tacked on 11in 18 attempts. Kuhn orchestrated the offense and accumulated 42 assists.
Rubenstein played a key role on defense with a career-high 26 digs in addition to serving up three aces. Sophomore
Katie Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Covenant Life) also notched a career mark with a dozen digs.
The Bullets never found a rhythm against Salisbury, committing 21 errors on the attack and nine errors on serve recieve. Cyr produced another solid effort with 10 kills and six digs. Kuhn handed out 22 assists and Rubenstein put up 14 digs.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 7, with a non-conference tilt against York (Pa.) College inside Bream Gym at 7 p.m.
