GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Offense doesn't appear to be an issue for the Gettysburg College women's soccer team this fall as the Bullets torched Susquehanna University for an 8-1 win in the season opener on Saturday.
Gettysburg (1-0) posted its highest goal total since beating Bryn Mawr College 8-0 on Sept. 30, 2005. Junior
Sam Hellerman (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) led the charge with two goals and an assist, while sophomore
Casey Attanasio (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) scored once and dished out three helpers.
The Bullets didn't waste time getting into the groove as Hellerman scored a pair of goals just 2:21 apart in the opening 12 minutes. She tallied the season's first goal at the nine-minute mark as freshman
Rachel West (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) put a cross right in front of the cage for the easy strike. Attanasio provided the assist on Hellerman's second goal at 11:21.
After netting five goals as a freshman, Attanasio jumped into the scoring column in her sophomore campaign by converting a pass from Hellerman in the box in the 17th minute. The hosts added one more goal before the half let up, this one off the foot of freshman
Lauren Macklin (Henniker, N.H./John Stark Regional) at 37:39.
Gettysburg kicked 18 balls at the goal in the opening stanza and the Bullets kept up the heat early in the second period. Freshmen
Ashley Miller (Rutledge, Pa./Strath Haven) just missed netting her first collegiate goal in the 48th minute before dishing out an assist to sophomore
Mackenzie Cobb (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) at 49:01. Just 53 seconds later, Miller had her goal with a long shot that sailed over the goalkeeper.
Susquehanna reached the scoring column in the 68th minute as Caitlin Murphy blasted a shot from 30 yards out that found the top of the goal over Gettysburg goalie
Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River).
Gettysburg added two more scores in the match's final 10 minutes, both assisted by Attanasio. West converted the first at 80:24 and sophomore
Lindsey Lyons (Hatfield, Pa./Pennridge) turned in the second with 17 seconds to spare in the contest.
The Bullets finished with a 33-9 margin in shots and also led in corner kicks 9-4. Rivera made a trio of stops for the hosts and Rachel Norbuts and Hilary Martin combined for nine saves for the visitors.
Gettysburg picks up action tomorrow against Ramapo College at Clark Field at 7 p.m. The Roadrunners fell to Stevenson University 2-0 in Saturday's opening affair.
