GETTYSBURG, Pa. – York (Pa.) College defeated Gettysburg College on the volleyball court for the first time in 13 years, sweeping aside the Bullets in three sets in a non-conference tilt inside Bream Gym Tuesday night.
York (3-1) picked up its first win over Gettysburg (3-2) since a 3-1 decision in 1997. The Spartans soundly won the first set, jumping out to an 8-1 advantage and earning a 25-12 decision. The Bullets bounced back in the second and held a 16-14 advantage before the visitors surged ahead with seven consecutive points en route to a 25-19 win. Outside of a 9-9 tie in the third frame, York held the upper-hand in the decisive set and won 25-22.
York dominated statistically with 45 kills and 51 digs compared to 24 and 30 for Gettysburg. The Spartans were efficient on the attack at 25.5 percent and managed eight aces.
Freshman
Courtney Cyr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) led Gettysburg with seven kills, while junior
Jamie Huffman (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) and freshman
Sarah Gorski (Darien, Conn./Darien) each tallied four kills. Junior
Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) led the defense with nine digs.
Alysse Beshore put up a big game for York, tallying 14 kills and only two errors in 21 attack attempts. Julie Coombs recorded 11 kills and setter Cortni Rentzel dished out 40 assists.
Gettysburg steps back on the court tomorrow (Sept. 8) at Frostburg State University (5-0) for a 7 p.m. match.
