HAVERFORD, Pa. – Freshman
Cydney Bracken put down the final two kills in the fifth set to lead the Gettysburg College volleyball team to a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory at Haverford College Tuesday night.
Gettysburg (13-6, 3-0 CC) pulled off the win by scores of 22-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-22, and 16-14. After splitting the first two sets, the Bullets jumped out to a four-point lead late in the third frame before Haverford (7-9, 2-1 CC) took advantage of six errors by the visitors to score nine of the final 12 points.
Gettysburg bounced back in the fourth set to tie the match as sophomore
Sarah Gorski hit three kills to set up match point and Bracken sealed the win with a kill of her own to force the decisive fifth set.
The Bullets, who had lost eight of the last nine meetings with the Fords, raced out to a 10-4 lead in the fifth frame powered by two kills apiece by Bracken and senior
Katie McConville. But Haverford came roaring back to tie the match at 14, forcing a Gettysburg timeout.
The stoppage worked its magic as Bracken ended the run with back-to-back kills to keep Gettysburg unbeaten in Centennial Conference play this fall.
Gettysburg set season highs for kills (70), attempts (211), assists (65), and digs (101).
Senior
Virginia Hogan turned in her usual consistent performance by leading Gettysburg with 18 kills and putting up 16 digs. Hogan has tallied double-figure kills in five consecutive matches.
Bracken finished with 17 kills, while Gorski notched a career-high 16 kills to go with seven digs and five total blocks. McConville also notched a career best with a dozen kills and put up a personal best 22 digs.
Sophomores
Lizzy Kuhn and
Nicole Petrillo combined for 53 assists and 21 digs splitting time at setter. Senior libero
Rebecca Rubenstein posted 22 digs.
Jenine Abbassi led Haverford with 16 kills and four total blocks. Laura Ramos posted 13 kills and a match-high 30 digs, while Haley Lawrence recorded a triple-double with 13 kills, 39 assists, and 16 digs.
Gettysburg faces another tough conference test this weekend with Swarthmore College inside Bream Gym on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m.
