WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Gettysburg College men's soccer team closed the season with a victory as sophomore
Devin Geiman scored in the 88th minute to lift the visiting Bullets past McDaniel College 2-1 on Tuesday night.
In a match that was rescheduled because of this past weekend's blizzard, Gettysburg (7-8-1, 4-4-1 CC) and McDaniel (4-11-2, 1-8 CC) played an even contest on paper. The Bullets finished with a 19-18 edge in shots, while each team attempted six corner kicks.
The Green Terror tested the water early, forcing sophomore goalie
Connor Darrell to make a pair of saves in the opening 5:37. Darrell wiped away two more attempts before the hosts found the back of the net in the 35th minute. Mike McClain found Shane McCracken on a breakaway to put McDaniel up 1-0.
After Darrell stopped another shot just seconds into the final period, Gettysburg turned in the equalizer as junior
Andrew McLane found freshman
Gerard Sager for the goal at 55:24.
Darrell made his sixth and final save in the 72nd minute to preserve the tie, while Geiman went to work testing McDaniel keeper Zach Nibbelink. The Bullet sophomore began by forcing Nibbelink to make a save following a corner kick in the 78th minute.
With just under three minutes left in regulation, Geiman took another stab at the cage. Nibbelink came through with another one of his match-high eight saves, but the Green Terror keeper couldn't control the ball and Geiman sent it home for the game-winner and his second goal of the fall.
Darrell finished with six saves and closed the year with a goals against average of 1.00. Geiman finished with four shots on the day, while McLane and senior
Teddy McCarthy each tallied three shots.
