Box Score

BALTIMORE – Gettysburg whittled an 11-point second-half deficit down to two in the final minutes, but the Bullets' rally came up just short in a 52-49 loss at Johns Hopkins University Wednesday evening in Goldfarb Gymnasium.

Junior center Christian Bors posted career-highs of 20 points and nine rebounds for the Bullets (3-3, 1-1 CC), who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

Gettysburg had a chance to tie it in the closing seconds, but a deep 3-pointer from junior forward Alex Zurn was off the mark.

Freshman forward George Bugarinovich led Johns Hopkins (4-1, 2-0 CC) with 13 points and seven rebounds.

A conventional 3-point play from sophomore center Alexsandar Nikolic with 11:15 remaining gave the Blue Jays their largest lead (37-26) before the Bullets began to chip away. Jumping into a full-court press, Gettysburg forced several turnovers in the backcourt, and a lay-up from Bors with 6:46 left made it a five-point game (43-38).

The Bullets drew to within a bucket (46-44) when freshman guard Joe Emerusabe dropped in a lay-up off a Bors feed with 3:38 to go. Emerusabe converted an old-fashioned 3-point play with 1:16 left to make it 51-49 before Johns Hopkins missed a 3-pointer with 46 seconds remaining. Bors was fouled on the rebound, but missed both ensuing free throws with the Bullets in the double bonus.

After the two sides exchanged missed jumpers, Daniel Corbett went 1-for-2 at the line for Johns Hopkins with 25 ticks showing, setting up Zurn's last-second attempt.

Zurn finished with nine points and five rebounds while junior guard Derek Brooks tied a season-high with eight points. Senior guard Brendan Trelease dished out a season-high five assists.

The Bullets led for nearly the entire first half and pushed their advantage to five on two occasions. A Bors reverse with 15:21 on the clock put the visitors up 6-5, and Gettysburg would not trail again before a jumper from Nikolic with 18 seconds left put Hopkins up 19-18 at the half, closing out a 6-0 spurt by the Blue Jays to end the period.

Both teams struggled shooting in the opening period, with the Blue Jays connecting on just 31.0 percent of their shots and Gettysburg going 36.8 percent from the field. Bugarinovic led all players with six points at the half while Zurn and Bors paced the Bullets with five points apiece.

Gettysburg picks up its scheduled on Saturday, when it hosts Haverford College at 2 p.m. in a Centennial Conference tilt.
