Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Four Bullets scored in double figures and the Gettysburg College men's basketball team pulled away in the final minutes to post a tight 65-57 victory over host Washington College Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference play.

With the win, Gettysburg (12-11, 9-7 CC) moves into a tie with McDaniel College for third place in the Centennial Conference standings heading into the final week of the regular season. Haverford, Muhlenberg, and Ursinus trail by one game in fifth place.

Senior center Andrew Powers led the Bullets with 15 points and seven rebounds despite sitting most of the second half with foul trouble. Sophomore forward Ben Constable added a season-high 13 points and seven rebounds while junior forward Tim Lang tallied 11 points and a game-high eight boards. Sophomore guard Derek Brooks contributed 11 points, four assists, and career-highs of four steals and three blocks.

Washington (7-16, 6-10 CC), which was held to 31.0 percent shooting, received 13 points apiece from Kevin Breslin and Sal Schittino. The Shoremen attempted 10 more free throws (33) than the Bullets, but made only 18.

The back-and-forth affair featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes. However, the Bullets took the lead for good when Powers knocked down a jumper with 2:51 left, and Gettysburg held the Shoremen to a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws the rest of the way.

A Brooks lay-up with 2:14 to go gave the Bullets their largest lead of the game (56-52) up to that point, and the Orange & Blue salted the game away at the foul line, going 9-for-10 at the stripe over the final 48 seconds.

Washington outscored Gettysburg 13-7 to start the game, but the Bullets took their first lead after a 7-0 run, with Powers fueling the spurt with five points and capping it with a lay-up at the 7:46 mark. The run was part of a 5:36 dry spell for Washington.

Neither team led by more than three over the remainder of the half, which included one tie and four lead changes. Junior guard Brendan Trelease drained a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left to put the Bullets up one, but Kevin Cunningham connected on a jumper with one tick showing, drawing Powers' second foul in the process. Cunningham missed the free throw and Washington led 26-25 at the break.

Powers led all players with 10 points at halftime while Breslin had nine.

In the second half, the Shoremen inched their lead to five (32-27) after a pair of Breslin free throws with 15:51 to go. But Constable answered with a lay-up eight seconds later, and neither team would lead by more than three until the final minute.

Powers, who became Gettysburg's career scoring leader on Wednesday against Franklin & Marshall, went to the bench with his fourth foul with 17:32 left, but Constable and freshman forward Connor Poston carried the Bullets in his absence. The pair scored 16 of the team's 18 points over a pressure-packed 8:07 stretch, which featured four ties and four lead changes.

A pair of Schittino free throws with 5:12 left gave Washington its final lead (48-46) of the day before a Lang put-back and a Constable lay-in 44 seconds apart. The Sho'men pulled even on two occasions, the last coming on an Adam Naymick jumper with 3:15 remaining that made it 52-52 before Powers' lead-assuming bucket.

The Bullets overcame a season-high 26 turnovers with a season-best 45 rebounds, 13 more than Washington's carom total.

Gettysburg visits Dickinson College on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Centennial Conference tilt.
