Box Score
CARLISLE, Pa. – Senior guard
Paul Crone nailed a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:03 left in overtime and Gettysburg rallied from five points down in the extra session to beat Dickinson College 59-57 in Centennial Conference men's basketball action Wednesday evening in the Kline Center.
With the win, the Bullets (13-11, 10-7 CC) remain tied with McDaniel College for third place in the Centennial Conference heading into the final game of the season. Gettysburg and McDaniel will face off in the regular season finale on Saturday, and the Bullets can clinch both a Centennial Conference playoff berth and a first-round bye with a win.
Senior forward
Kevin Kennedy led the Bullets with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting while sophomore forward
Ben Constable scored 11 of his 12 points in the second half and overtime. Senior center
Andrew Powers added seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds while becoming the first player in school history and the third in Centennial Conference history to surpass 1,900 career points.
Adam Honig led Dickinson (13-11, 11-6 CC) with 13 points while Matt Dolan and Logan Furr each tallied 10.
It was Gettysburg's first overtime win since a 68-66 victory at McDaniel on Jan. 30, 2008.
Chris Heine gave the Devils their first lead since midway through the second half when he knocked down a trey 42 seconds into the extra session. Dickinson pushed its lead to five – its largest of the night – after a Dolan lay-up with 3:26 to go. However, the Bullets came back with six straight points, started with a 3 from Crone in the right corner followed by three straight 1-for-2 trips at the line from sophomore guard
Derek Brooks, Powers, and Constable.
Dickinson took a 57-55 lead after a Furr 3-pointer with 2:08 showing, but after Constable hit one of two free throws with 1:46 left, Crone blocked a jumper in the lane before draining his big shot – a straightaway, long-range triple – to make it 59-57.
After a Red Devil turnover the Bullets were able to eat up all but 10 seconds on the clock before being whistled for a shot-clock violation. Dickinson called timeout with 7.3 ticks left, but Honig missed a fadeaway jumper as time expired.
The Bullets utilized stifling defense in the early going, holding Dickinson to four points over the opening 8:54. In the meantime, Gettysburg made six of its first 10 buckets while racing out to a 16-4 lead. Kennedy scored the Bullets first seven points, nailing a couple of jumpers sandwiched around a 3-pointer, and a Powers turnaround J was the fourth straight Gettysburg field goal to start the game, making it 9-2 two minutes in.
Kennedy finished off a conventional 3-point play to make it 16-4, and it was a 20-8 game after junior guard
Brendan Trelease drained a trey from the right corner with 6:51 left. However, the Bullets went cold for the remainder of the half, missing seven straight field goal attempts while Dickinson closed the period on a 10-0 run. Honig scored the final five points for the Red Devils, including a jumper just before the buzzer to make it 20-18 at the half.
Kennedy led all players with 10 points at the break. The Bullets shot 35.0 percent in the opening period while holding Dickinson to a 29.2 percent mark.
The Devils tied it three times early in the second half before taking their first lead on a Furr fast-break jumper with 15:08 left, making it 26-24. That's when, for the second game in a row, Constable gave the Bullets a lift. Constable scored eight of 10 Gettysburg points over a tight 5:22 stretch which featured three ties and two lead changes.
Constable's final basket of the stretch, a put-back of his own missed shot, tied it at 36-36 with 7:47 left after Dickinson had twice pushed its lead to four. The Bullets cashed in at the foul line to go up by three, as Trelease went 2-for-2 in a 1-and-1 situation before Constable hit 1-of-2 with 40 ticks showing, also in a 1-and-1, to make it 49-46.
Honig tied for Dickinson, nailing a trey from the top of the arc with the shot clock winding down, tying it at 49-49 with 20 seconds on the clock. After a timeout, Powers missed an off-balance runner in the lane, and Dickinson's desperation half-court heave was short, sending the game to overtime.
Gettysburg and McDaniel square off at 2 p.m. on Saturday during Senior Day.
