Powers Breaks Career Scoring Mark in Loss to F&M

Senior Center Breaks 49-Year-Old Record

Andrew Powers breaks Gettysburg's career scoring record with this free throw against F&M.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior center Andrew Powers broke Gettysburg's career scoring record, but 21st-ranked Franklin & Marshall College topped the Bullets 68-46 in Centennial Conference men's basketball action Wednesday evening in Bream Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Bullets (11-11, 8-7 CC) find themselves in a four-way tie for second place in the Centennial Conference.

Franklin & Marshall head coach Glenn Robinson recorded career victory No. 800, becoming just the 13th NCAA men's basketball to reach the milestone.

Powers came into the game 11 points shy of the career mark of 1,880 set by Ron Warner '62 in three years from 1959-62. He broke the mark with a pair of free throws with 10:56 left in the game and finished the night with a team-high 13 points, setting his new record at 1,882 points.

Senior forward Mike Baker scored a game-high 18 points for F&M (18-4, 13-2 CC), which raced out to an 18-point halftime lead, while sophomore forward Hayk Gyokchyan tallied 15 points and eight rebounds. Senior forward James McNally added 11 points off the bench.

The Bullets, who also received 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists from sophomore guard Derek Brooks, held the Diplomats to four points over the opening six minutes and led 6-4 after a Brooks jumper with 14:36 on the clock. However, F&M answered with an 11-2 run to open up a 15-8 lead with 10:22 to go.

The Dips saw their lead hit double digits on a Steve Tolliver lay-up with 8:40 left, and it swelled to 17 (27-10) after a James McNally lay-up with 6:24 on the clock. It was a 20-point game before the Bullets scored four straight points inside the final two minutes, but a Gyokchyan lay-up with 29 seconds left made it a 36-18 game at the half.

F&M held Gettysburg to 30.0 percent shooting in the opening half while connecting on 51.5 percent of its shots.

The Diplomats broke it open at the start of the second half, outscoring the Bullets 17-8 to start the period, with Baker scoring eight points during the run. The lead reached as much as 30 on two occasions, the last coming on a Baker jumper with 7:19 left.

F&M shot an even 50.0 percent for the game while the Bullets finished at 37.8 percent.

Gettysburg returns to the court on Saturday, when they visit Washington College in a Centennial Conference game at 4 p.m.
