Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Mary Washington scored three runs in the bottom of the first, then broke it open with a five-run seventh and the 22nd-ranked Eagles defeated Gettysburg 8-1 in a non-conference baseball game Friday afternoon.

The Bullets (0-4) received 2-for-4 performances at the plate from freshman Austin Davis, senior Chris Simard, and senior Cam Riera.

With sophomore Ryan Taylor on the mound for the Bullets, it was a 3-1 game at the seventh inning stretch before Mary Washington (10-1) pulled away. After getting the first out, Taylor yielded one run on three straight singles before allowing a walk to load the bases. Senior Matt Karis then came on and walked in a run before a passed ball and wild pitch pushed across two more. An RBI-single concluded the scoring.

In the first, the Eagles capitalized on a Bullet error to lead off the game and went on to score three times (two unearned) on three hits and a sacrifice fly.

Taylor settled in after the first, however, and blanked Mary Washington on three hits from the second through the sixth.

Gettysburg scored its lone run in the top of the seventh, when sophomore Drew Hoppes and freshman Tommy LeNoir led off with back-to-back singles before Riera drove in Hoppes with another single.

Taylor (0-1) finished with four strikeouts and two walks while allowing seven runs on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings. Freshman Drew Felsenthal came on to throw a scoreless ninth in his collegiate debut.

Eric Rehbein (4-0) won his fourth straight decision to open the season for the Eagles, working seven innings and giving up one run on eight hits while striking out four and walking none. He also helped himself at the plate, going 3-for-4.

Beattie Southerland went 4-for-5 for Mary Washington.

The Bullets return to action on Sunday, when they visit Washington & Lee University for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
