Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Trailing 10-9 with less than eight minutes remaining, the Gettysburg offense suddenly came alive as the sixth-ranked Bullets rattled off seven-straight scores en route to a 16-11 victory over No. 11 Catholic University on Tuesday night.

Gettysburg (10-2) received career-high scoring efforts from senior Marnie Commins, junior Hannah Church, and freshman Kelsey Markiewicz. Commins and Church tied their personal highs with five goals apiece, the former adding an assist, while Markiewicz tossed in four goals to go with three draw controls.

Without lightning and thunder, rain and wind did little to slow the rescheduled game between Gettysburg and Catholic (8-3) on Tuesday. The Bullets held a one-goal advantage early in the second half, but the Cardinals tallied three of four goals during a six-minute stretch to go up 10-9 with 16:13 to play.

Gettysburg kept its cool despite the deficit and Catholic's deliberate offense, and eventually the ball came the host's way via a turnover. After the successful clear, Markiewicz delivered the equalizer at 7:49 to start the game's decisive run.

The draw became the Bullets' offensive key as the squad won each of the next seven, the first three leading to quick goals. Following Markiewicz's goal, Gettysburg added three more in the next minute, including another tally from the first-year off a feed from Loren Pruitt at 6:46.

Catholic tried to stop the run as Gabby Sena smothered a shot by Lindsey Robinson which led to an offensive possession for the visitors, but the Cardinals turned the ball over and the Bullets' ran right to the goal as Robinson set up freshman Katie Blumenthal for the score at 4:42. Church and Commins added two more goals to give Gettysburg a comfortable 16-10 lead with 2:25 left to play.

The majority of the game was a pitted battle between two nationally-ranked foes. Gettysburg struck out to an early 5-2 lead following back-to-back goals by Church just 35 seconds apart, but Catholic tossed in the next three goals to tie the score. Church scored the final goal of the half to give the hosts a 6-5 advantage.

The pendulum continued to swing back and forth early in the final period before Catholic took its first lead at 9-8 on a goal by Katie Buonpastore at 20:20. Markiewicz answered to tie the game and the Cardinals regained the upper-hand on a goal by Mary Swarthout at 16:13.

Gettysburg turned in its best game of the season on the draw, winning 13 of its season-high 19 draw controls in the second half alone. The Bullets also led in shots (31-27) and ground balls (12-10).

Pruitt finished with one goal and two helpers, while Robinson dished out a pair of assists for Gettysburg. Nine different Bullets tallied a draw control on the day, led by sophomore Mairead McGuirk with four.

Junior Maddie Coleman notched her third-straight game with 10 or more saves with 10 stops on Tuesday.

Buonpastore led Catholic with four goals and Kate Robinson added three. Sena made six saves in the Cardinal cage.

Gettysburg turns back around tomorrow (April 13) with a non-conference contest at Alvernia University at 4 p.m.
