ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Gettysburg College softball team picked up its third consecutive Centennial Conference split by winning the nightcap 7-4 at Muhlenberg College on Sunday.
Gettysburg (16-14, 6-6 CC) failed to make a four-run lead stand up in the opening game as Muhlenberg (18-13, 9-3 CC) plated seven runs in its final two at bats to win 7-5. The Bullets made the lead stick in the finale after scoring the first seven runs.
Coming off splits with Dickinson College and Washington College this week, had designs on a sweep on Sunday by jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first game at Muhlenberg. Most of the damage came in the second frame with junior
Catrina DelGais and freshman
Maggie Maguire each posting RBI singles and junior
Adrienne Rahs drawing a bases-loaded walk.
The Mules jumped into the scoring column in the fifth inning with a pair of RBI doubles. After picking up another run in the sixth via a wild pitch, Erica Wenzel cleared the bases with a double to put Muhlenberg in front 6-4. The hosts added another run on a single by pitcher Ashley Brewer.
Gettysburg netted one run in its final at bat before Brewer closed the door on her ninth victory of the spring.
DelGais went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI, while freshman
Abby Ferguson notched a trio of base knocks for the Bullets.
The visitors once again jumped out early in the second game with three runs in the opening two innings. After picking up one run in the first on a single by sophomore
Sam Bader, senior
Megan Lott started the second inning with her 100th career hit. Both Lott and Ferguson later scored on a triple to right by sophomore
Joy Hallfors.
Gettysburg added two more runs in the fifth and was primed for more with the bases packed and no outs, but consecutive fielder's choices to home ended the threat. The visitors tacked on two more runs in the sixth to take a 7-0 advantage.
Muhlenberg posted a run in the sixth and brought across three more to start the seventh frame. The Mules had the tying run at the plate with runners on first and third, but Rahs gunned down Brewer attempting to swipe second to end the game.
DelGais capped a five-hit day with three more base knocks in the finale. The Bullets totaled 17 hits in the game with Rahs, Maguire, Bader, Ferguson, Lott, and senior
Caitlin Bay each posting two. Bader drove in three runs and Rahs scored three times.
