Diplomats Break Game Open With Seven-Run Seventh

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall out-hit Gettysburg just 11-10, but the Diplomats capitalized on 11 walks en route to a 16-4 Centennial Conference victory over the Bullets Sunday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday but was rescheduled due to field conditions.

F&M (12-11, 4-2 CC) broke it open with a seven-run seventh in which the Diplomats sent 13 batters to the plate. Leading 5-1 entering the frame, the Dips had just one hit in the inning but utilized six walks, one hit batsman, and one error.

Senior Matt Karis finished 2-for-4 at the plate for the Bullets (8-13, 2-4 CC). Sophomore John Donovan started on the mound for Gettysburg and was charged with the loss, yielding four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walk over four innings.

Freshmen Alex Freeman, Zach Parsons, Kevin Wilson, and Ben Roessle all recorded their first collegiate hit while pinch-hitting in the ninth, with Freeman legging out a double.

Blue Wells went 2-for-5 with four RBIs to lead F&M while Russell Tischler scored three runs. Starter Josh Gray (2-2) went 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win, allowing one run on five hits and four walks while fanning four.

F&M went ahead 2-0 in the third, when Wells smashed a towering two-run double to straightaway center. The Diplomats pushed their lead to 5-0 after getting one run in the fourth and two in the fifth against Donovan (0-2) and reliever Brett Norton.

Gettysburg cut the deficit to 5-1 in the fifth on an RBI-double from senior Chris Simard. But the Dips used their big seventh to go ahead 12-1, as the Bullets went through four different pitchers in the inning.

Franklin & Marshall tacked on four runs on five hits and one error in the ninth. Making his collegiate debut, freshman Rob Stalzer entered the game with the bases loaded and got the final three outs, including an inning-ending double play.

The Bullets pushed across three runs on four hits and two walks in the bottom of the inning, with Parsons, Wilson, and Roessle all singling for their first career RBIs.

Junior Michael Odierna worked a scoreless 1 1/3 innings of relief for the Bullets.

Gettysburg returns home on Wednesday, when it hosts Dickinson College in another Centennial Conference tilt beginning at 3:30 p.m.
