OPENING STATEMENTS
For the 11th consecutive season, the Bullets play their season opener versus Lebanon Valley College as they visit the Flying Dutchmen on the natural grass of Arnold Field in their lone non-conference outing of the year. Saturday's game kicks off the 119th season of Gettysburg College football, and it will also mark the end of the LVC-Gettysburg series for the immediate future. The Dutchmen dropped the Bullets from their future schedules after the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC), of which Lebanon Valley is a member, announced the addition of two new football members (Misericordia, Stevenson) for 2012.

ALL-TIME SERIES
Gettysburg leads Lebanon Valley 31-6-1 in the all-time series that started in 1898. The Bullets dominated the series early, winning 27 of the first 30 meetings, including nine straight from 1980-2003. However, it has been a back-and-forth series since 2004, with the Dutchmen winning four of the last seven meetings.
THE COACHES
Gettysburg is coached by
Barry Streeter, who is in his 33rd year at the helm of the Bullets. With 161 career victories, Streeter ranks 10th among active Division III coaches in wins. He is also 26th on the all-time Division III coaches win list. Streeter, who is Gettysburg's longest tenured and all-time winningest football coach, is a 1971 Lebanon Valley graduate and a member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.
The Flying Dutchmen are led by Jim Monos, who is 79-100-2 entering the eighth year of his second stint as Lebanon Valley's head coach. Monos first coached LVC from 1986-1996 before taking over again in 2004. He is the program's career leader in both wins and games coached.
LAST MEETING
Quarterback
Kyle Whitmoyer turned in a stellar performance in his first collegiate start, rushing for 130 yards and three touchdowns as Gettysburg defeated host Lebanon Valley College 42-28 in the season opener for both teams last year. The Bullets, who piled up 488 yards of offense and 374 yards on the ground, opened the game with a 21-0 first-quarter run and never trailed after Whitmoyer's 77-yard touchdown romp midway through the opening quarter. The Flying Dutchmen answered with 21 unanswered points to pull even early in the third quarter, but the Bullets went ahead to stay shortly thereafter by scoring 14 points in 43 seconds. Tailback
Jamel Mutunga '11 added a career-high 151 yards rushing for the Bullets and became the seventh player in school history to surpass 2,000 career rushing yards. Tailback Ben Guiles rushed for 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 23 carries for Lebanon Valley.
GETTYSBURG OFFENSE
Plenty of new faces will dot the offense for Gettysburg, particularly at the skill positions. After leading the Centennial Conference and finishing 13th in Division III in scoring offense (39.4 ppg), total offense (464.1 ypg), and rushing offense (248.2 ypg) last season, the Bullets lost six offensive starters to graduation. The Orange & Blue will showcase first-time starters at tailback, both wing positions, and wide receiver, as well as center and right tackle. Gettysburg does, however, bring back senior quarterback
Kyle Whitmoyer, who passed for 1,767 yards and 12 touchdowns against just five interceptions. He also scrambled for 501 yards and 10 touchdowns. At tight end, Gettysburg returns its three-man rotation of junior
Matt Brophy, who caught 13 passes for 207 yards a year ago, and seniors
Dennis Bazow and
Mack Krush. Senior
James Monreale, a two-time all-conference left tackle, returns to lead the offensive line. He will be joined by a pair of returning senior starters in
Kyle Reutter at left guard and
Walter Ackermann at right guard.
THE GETTYSBURG DEFENSE
All but one starter are back on the defensive side of the ball for the Bullets, who will look to improve upon their ninth-place Centennial Conference finish in scoring defense (32.6 ppg)and 10th-place standing in total defense (418.1 ypg). Junior linebacker
Larry DelViscio and senior safety
Joe Delaney return after sharing the team lead with 92 tackles in 2010. DelViscio was a fixture in the opponents backfield, as he also led the Bullets with 12.5 tackles for loss. Senior safety
Peter Hak piled up 71 tackles in just eight games while senior cornerback
Tyler Fasanella led the team with four interceptions. Senior cornerback
Rob Pennella also returns after leading the Bullets with 11 passes defended.
THE GETTYSBURG SPECIAL TEAMS
The special teams unit was also hit hard by graduation, claiming the team's kicker, punter, and both return specialists. The place-kicking and punting duties will likely be held by senior
Rob Pennella while freshman
Matt Perkins is set for kickoffs. Sophomores
Tommy LeNoir and
Aden Twer are poised to handle kickoff returns while LeNoir will likely return punts as well.
SCOUTING LEBANON VALLEY
Like the Bullets, the Flying Dutchmen are coming off a strong finish to their 2010 season. After a 1-4 start, Lebanon Valley won five in a row to earn a bid in the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl, where they fell to Johns Hopkins. The Dutchmen return nine starters and five from an offense that finished fifth in the MAC in scoring (23.9 ppg) and fourth in total offense (339.1 ypg) last season, Senior tailback Ben Guiles returns after breaking LVC single-season records for rushing yards (1,330) and rushing touchdowns (17) a year ago. He finished as the 17th-leading rusher in Division III while helping the Valley lead the MAC in rushing offense (188.4 ypg). Senior quarterback Colt Zarilla will take over under center after seeing significant playing time over the past three seasons. The success of the offense may depend on the development of its offensive line, which lost four starters to graduation after allowing a conference-low 12 sacks in 2010. Defensively, the Dutchmen bring back only four starters after finishing third in the MAC in scoring defense (26.1 ppg) and fourth in total defense (365.6 ypg). However, they do return their top two tacklers in senior linebacker Jason Gigous, who posted 110 tackles and three interceptions, and senior defensive end Cory Homer, who racked up 80 tackles.
FOUR NAMED CAPTAINS
Four seniors will share the duties of team captain for Gettysburg in 2011. Senior free safety
Joe Delaney was named a captain for the second year in a row while strong safety
Peter Hak, offensive tackle
James Monreale, and quarterback
Kyle Whitmoyer are serving as captains for the first time for the Bullets.
NEW FACES ON COACHING STAFF
Gettysburg head coach
Barry Streeter added three to his coaching staff during the offseason.
James Boyeas is the new wide receivers/wings coach while
JR Clark takes charge of the defensive backs. In addition,
Dean Staley '08, a former starting linebacker for the Bullets, returns to coach his former position. Boyeas, a 2007 graduate of Heidelberg College, most recently coached at Division II Grand Valley State while Clark, a 2008 Wilmington College graduate, comes to the Battlefield from Wittenberg University.
