HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Junior tailback
Ted Delia rushed for a career-high 105 yards and scored four touchdowns – including one on a 75-yard punt return – while sophomore receiver
Aden Twer caught eight passes for 164 yards as Gettysburg rolled by host Juniata College 58-27 in a Centennial Conference tilt on Saturday at Knox Stadium.
Gettysburg (2-1, 2-0 CC), which outgained the Eagles 596-239, won its second game in a row and improved to 2-0 in the Centennial Conference for the first time since 1996.
The Bullets never trailed after jumping out to a 21-0 lead and a 28-6 halftime advantage.
Delia posted his first career 100-yard game while Twer went over 150 yards for the second straight Saturday. Last week, he caught five passes for 179 yards, including a touchdown catch on the last play of the game in the Bullets win over Ursinus.
A pair of quarterbacks split the time under center for the Bullets, with senior
Kyle Whitmoyer getting the start and alternating with junior
Kody Smith. Whitmoyer finished with 134 yards and one touchdown on 9-of-17 passing while Smith threw for 163 yards and two TDs, completing 10-of-15 passes, while rushing for an additional 49 yards.
Freshman
Nick Ulassin added 70 yards rushing and one touchdown for the Bullets.
Junior linebacker
Larry DelViscio made nine tackles to lead the Gettysburg defense, which held Juniata to 100 yards and eight first downs in the opening half and 239 yards for the game, including just 103 on the ground. Junior defensive end
Joe Ventresca made 2.5 tackles for loss among his career-high seven stops while senior safety
Joe Delaney made six hits to break into Gettysburg's career top-10 list. He now ranks ninth with 267 tackles.
Senior
Rob Pennella was 6-for-6 on extra points and averaged 37.2 yards on four punts.
It was a penalty-infested game for the second year in a row for Gettysburg, which was whistled for a whopping 20 penalties for 206 yards. Last season, the Bullets were called for 17 penalties adding up to 167 yards against the Eagles.
Ward Udinski threw for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-46 passing for Juniata (0-3, 0-2 CC) while Julian Valdiserri caught eight passes for 46 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
After a pair of unsuccessful possessions to start the game, the Bullets got hot, scoring on four of their next six drives. Gettysburg threatened on its second possession, marching to the Juniata-13, but that's where Whitmoyer had his pass tipped and intercepted by safety Keith Stewart.
Smith entered the game on the Bullets third drive and picked up right where he left off against Ursinus. After tossing a game-ending 32-yard touchdown pass to Twer a week ago, Smith went right back to speedy wideout on his first play of the game, launching a deep ball down the right sideline for a 64-yard touchdown pass. Pennella knocked through his first extra point to make it 7-0 with 5:33 left in the first quarter.
The Eagles were forced to go three-and-out on their next two drives before the Bullets came up with a big special teams play. With Juniata punting from its own 39-yard line, junior
Chris Nolan broke through the line and shoved a blocker into the punter. The ball deflected off the blocker and was picked up at the Eagle-36 by senior safety
Peter Hak, who returned it 20 yards. Delia took care of the rest, picking up seven yards on a run before rushing it in from nine yards out, making it 14-0 with 14:17 left in the half.
After another short Juniata possession, a 30-yard punt return from sophomore
Tommy LeNoir set up the Bullets at their own 45. Seven plays later, Smith hit Twer again, this time with a 3-yard slant in the end zone to make it 21-0 with 10:25 showing.
Juniata came back with its lone scoring drive of the half, moving 69 yard on eight plays, capped by a 2-yard touchdown pass from Udinski to Valdeserri, who made a sprawling catch in the back right corner of the end zone with 6:56 remaining in the half. The extra point was missed.
The Bullets answered, going 80 yards on 10 plays before scoring their fourth touchdown of the half. On a fourth-and-2 at the Juniata-7, Delia ran it in for his second TD, giving his team a 28-6 lead with 3:40 on the clock, and it would hold up as the score at the half.
Juniata made a pair of big plays to keep within striking distance early in the second half. After the Eagles punted on the first possession, cornerback Nicholas Stubbs intercepted a pass that was bobbled by a Gettysburg receiver and returned it to the Eagle-4. Udinski then connected with Valdiserri for a 4-yard touchdown pass, and it was 28-12 after a failed two-point conversion.
Another big Smith-to-Twer pass set up Gettysburg's next score. Facing a third-and-eight at the Bullet-43, Twer made a short catch before nearly racing in for a touchdown, as he was knocked out of bounds just in front of the right pylon. Delia broke through from the 1 on the next play as the Bullets took a 35-12 lead with 11:54 left in the third quarter.
Juniata scored off a blocked punt on Gettysburg's next possession, as Tyler Cottle fell on the loose ball in the end zone to pull the Eagles to within 35-19 with 9:42 on third-quarter clock.
The Bullets settled any doubt by outscoring Juniata 23-8 the rest of the way. Whitmoyer found freshman receiver
Bobby Romano for a 39-yard touchdown pass before Delia turned in perhaps the play of the game on a punt return. After running into a wall of defenders for what appeared to be a short gain, Delia emerged from the pile and sprinted down the left side of the field 75 yards for Gettysburg's first punt return touchdown in four years. It was the first since
Charles Curcio '11 had a 58-yarder against, ironically, Juniata on Oct. 13, 2007.
The Eagles scored their final points on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Udinski to Zach McCaulley with 9:07 left in the game, capping a 19-play, 84-yard drive that made it 51-27.
Ulassin raced in for a 26-yard touchdown run with 6:47 remaining to set the final score.
Gettysburg returns to action next Saturday, when it hosts Susquehanna University at 1 p.m. in another Centennial Conference match-up.
