Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore James Rice and senior Eric Hynes scored just over three minutes apart spanning the first and second halves and the Gettysburg College men's soccer team opened its 2011 season with a 2-1 non-conference victory at Lebanon Valley College Friday afternoon.

With the win, Gettysburg's Brett Kelly earned his first victory as head coach after serving as associate head coach last season.

Rice put the Bullets on the scoreboard with 1:11 left in the opening stanza, making a run into the box and hopping over a defender before potting his first collegiate goal. Gettysburg outshot the Flying Dutchmen 9-5 in the first half.

Just 2:08 into the second period, Hynes put the visitors up 2-0 off an assist from sophomore Tyler Shaffer. Lebanon Valley cut the lead in half in the 68th minute on a goal from Chris Hall, but sophomore goalie Connor Darrell preserved the win with a spectacular save in the final minute. With 60 ticks showing, Darrell turned aside a one-timer from Andrew Cooper off a cross.

Darrell finished with five saves as the Bullets outshot LVC 17-9. Josh Lineaweaver made seven stops for the Dutchmen.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, when it visits Susquehanna University at 6 p.m. in another non-conference outing.
