Box Score
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Gettysburg out-rebounded Haverford 41-18, and the Bullets defeated the Fords 65-54 in Centennial Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Gooding Arena.
Junior center
Benjamin Constable posted 18 points, including 16 in the first half and 12 in the final 7:49 of the opening period, while pulling down six rebounds for the Bullets (8-9, 5-5 CC). Senior guard
Brendan Trelease scored all 17 of his points in the second half and helped ice the victory by going 6 for 6 at the foul line in the final 42 seconds.
Junior guard
Derek Brooks added a season-high nine points for Gettysburg while sophomore forward
Connor Poston contributed with career-highs of six points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Gettysburg recorded its highest rebound total since grabbing 42 in its season opener – an overtime loss to Alvernia – and logged its largest rebounding advantage since Jan. 24, 2004, when it held a 46-22 surplus in a 60-42 victory at McDaniel.
With the win, Bullet head coach
George Petrie pulled to within one victory of the program record of 321 coaching victories, set by Hen Bream '24 from 1927-55.
Ian Goldberg scored a game-high 19 points and dished out six assists for Haverford (6-11, 4-6 CC) while Cam Baker (13) and Louis Cipriano (10) also scored in double figures.
Haverford led for most of the opening half and forged an eight-point advantage on two occasions, the last coming on a Cipriano trey that made it 24-16 with 8:13 to go. But that's when Constable got hot, scoring 12 of the Bullets final 17 points of the half. With the Fords leading 28-22, he poured in eight straight points, capped by a lay-up at the 2:10 mark that gave Gettysburg its first lead of the game at 30-28. After a Goldberg 3-pointer, Brooks put the Bullets in front to stay, completing a conventional 3-point play with 30 seconds left that capped an 11-3 run and put his team up 33-31 at the break.
Gettysburg enjoyed its first double-digit lead (44-34) of the afternoon when Trelease scored his first points on a triple with 14:41 showing, and the Fords were unable to get closer than eight the rest of the way. Like Constable, Trelease scored a dozen points in the latter part of the half, starting with back-to-back treys 1:42 apart to give the Bullets a 58-45 lead with 3:46 to go. He ended up scoring 12 of the team's final 13 points following his perfect showing at the foul line inside the final minute.
The Bullets made 16 of 19 foul shots and outscored Haverford by 13 at the charity stripe, where the Fords were just 3-for-6.
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Wednesday, when it visits Dickinson College at 8 p.m. in another Centennial Conference affair.
