GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall College ended up the victor in a back-and-forth battle with Gettysburg College inside Bream Gym, holding off the Bullets for a five-set victory in Centennial Conference volleyball action on Wednesday night.
The loss knocks Gettysburg (15-12, 6-3 CC) out of contention for the top seed in the conference playoffs. The Bullets clinched a spot in the postseason already, but the team's seed will not be determined until the final day of the regular season. Gettysburg can finish anywhere from third to fifth pending the outcome of Saturday's matches.
Franklin & Marshall (16-13, 8-1 CC) remained tied with Johns Hopkins University (26-3, 8-1 CC) for the top spot in the Centennial standings with the victory. Gettysburg hosts the Blue Jays this Saturday, Oct. 27, at noon.
Wednesday's contest saw Gettysburg embark on its seventh five-match battle of the season. The Diplomats jumped out to an early lead with a 25-16 victory in the first set, but the hosts came right back by bursting out to an 8-1 advantage en route to a 25-19 decision in the second set. The two sides traded the lead six times in the third set before the visitors picked up six of the final seven points in a 25-20 outcome.
Gettysburg stormed back in the fourth set, knocking down 14 kills in the frame. The Diplomats pulled to 12-9 before the Bullets ended the set on a 13-4 run to win 25-13. Gettysburg's second wind ran out as Franklin & Marshall jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the decisive frame en route to a 15-8 decision.
