SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at Swarthmore College on Saturday. The Bullets were upended in five sets by the host Garnet in a Centennial Conference meeting before falling to Moravian College in a non-conference battle later in the afternoon.
Gettysburg (11-10, 3-2 CC) held 1-0 and 2-1 leads over Swarthmore (12-3, 4-2 CC), but the Garnet battled back to close out the five-set victory 21-25, 25-13, 22-25, 25-12, 20-18. Swarthmore held match point at 14-11 before the Bullets reeled off the next four points to set up their own match point. After the set was tied for the 15th and final time at 18-18, the Garnet closed the match with a kill by Danielle Sullivan and a service ace.
Sophomore
Cydney Bracken led Gettysburg's attack with 16 kills, while juniors
Sarah Gorski and
Courtney Cyr posted 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Senior
Katie Wilson recorded a career-high 33 digs to pace the defense.
Kathryn Montemurro logged 25 kills and 19 digs for the hosts, while Madison Heppe and Sullivan combined for 65 digs.
Gettysburg jumped out with a 25-19 victory in its opening set against Moravian (16-4), but the Greyhounds recovered to take the next three sets with scores of 25-23, 25-22, and 25-21. Cyr capped a productive day for Gettysburg with a personal best 12 kills to go with four total blocks. Wilson finished with 24 digs and junior
Lizzy Kuhn served four aces.
Lauren Hostetler led Moravian with 17 kills and 14 digs. Kelly Brown recorded 45 assist and 18 digs, while Jesse Krasley put up 18 digs.
Next up for Gettysburg is a non-conference trip to Susquehanna University on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m.
