HAVERFORD, Pa. – Cam Baker nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to spoil a valiant Gettysburg comeback, as the Fords edged the Bullets 57-56 at Haverford College Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference men's basketball action.
Gettysburg (2-4, 1-2 CC) had erased an 11-point deficit with less than six minutes remaining following a late 15-2 run. Freshman guard
Sango Amolo hit a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left to give the Bullets a 55-54 lead, then went 1-for-2 at the stripe with seven ticks showing. The Fords then brought the ball up the floor and called timeout before Baker took the inbound pass and drained a long ball from the right elbow.
Senior
Alex Zurn posted game-highs of 24 points and nine rebounds for Gettysburg while sophomore
Joe Emerusabe grabbed a career-high seven rebounds to go with four assists. Baker finished with 15 points for Haverford (3-3, 2-1 CC).
Neither team led by more than six in a tight first half, and a Baker jumper gave the Fords their largest advantage of the stanza (15-9) with 10:25 on the clock. However, the Bullets rallied to take the lead on a pair of Zurn foul shots, and his coast-to-coast lay-up capped a 7-0 run to make it 22-19. But Haverford answered with a 6-0 spurt and a Louis Cipriano 3-pointer with six seconds left gave the Fords a 31-26 halftime lead.
Gettysburg kept it close early in the second half, and a Zurn lay-in with 11:43 pulled the Bullets to within 39-38. But a 6-0 Ford surge gave the hosts their 11-point lead (52-41) after an Anthony Reyes trey with 5:58 remaining.
Zurn sparked the Bullets rally when he converted a conventional 3-point play with 5:37 to go. After a Brett Cohen lay-up, Gettysburg ran off 10 straight points, starting with a jumper from sophomore guard
Sean Gordon. Senior guard
Derek Brooks added back-to-back buckets, and his put-back with 1:02 showing made it a one-point game (54-53).
The Fords committed a pair of turnovers on their next two possessions, setting up Amolo's free throws and Baker's game-winner.
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Wednesday, when it visits 11th-ranked Franklin & Marshall College at 7 p.m. in another Centennial Conference game.
