FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Gettysburg College baseball team stayed perfect on its Spring Break trip to Florida with a sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran College on Monday.
Coming off a sweep of SUNY Plattsburgh on Sunday, the Bullets (4-1) defeated the Warriors 15-8 in the opener, with every Gettysburg starter batting safely and scoring at least one run. Junior
John Donovan twirled a four-hitter in the second game as Gettysburg earned a 2-1 victory.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-2) was playing its first games of the season.
Gettysburg used three big innings to earn its Game One victory, starting with a four-run first that included just one hit. But the Bullets utilized a walk, three errors, and two hit batsmen while freshman
Cory Karagjozi capped the inning with a two-run double.
The Warriors came back to tie it with four unearned runs over the second and third against Bullet starter
Brett Norton, who left the game after 2 2/3 innings pitched. Sophomore
Chris Yoda came on to throw 3 1/3 scoreless frames before yielding four runs on four hits, two walks, and a hit batsman in the seventh.
After WLC starter Alex Raver settled in to blank the Bullets from the second through the fourth, Gettysburg broke out with four runs on five hits in the fifth. Junior
Pat Cody roped a two-run triple before sophomore
Al Posch and senior
Drew Roy knocked back-to-back singles to make it 8-4.
After tacking on another run in the sixth, Gettysburg broke it open with a six spot in the seventh, when it sent 12 batters to the plate. The Bullets ripped six hits and drew three walks as their lead ballooned to 15-4.
Cody finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a pair of runs while sophomore
Nate Simon, Posch, and Karagjozi all had two hits. Sophomore
Alex Freeman scored three runs.
Yoda (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory while allowing four runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out one.
The Bullets threatened early in the nightcap, putting runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Patrick O'Grady led off with a single and Freeman walked before both runners moved up on a wild pitch. But Warrior starter Jaime Paumen escaped the jam and went on the blank the Bullets in the second and third as well.
In the meantime Donovan was in command, allowing just one base runner on a hit batsman in the second. The Warriors finally collected their first hit with a leadoff single in the fourth, but Donovan promptly induced a 6-4-3 double play before striking out his fifth batter to end the inning.
Gettysburg broke through in the fourth, when Cody led off with a single and stole second. Two batters later Cody scored when Roy grounded out as the Bullets went up 1-0.
Cody provided a spark again in the sixth with a one-out single. Pinch runner
Austin Davis scored three batters later on a single from senior Clint O'Brien.
Donovan carried his shutout into the seventh, but Wisconsin Lutheran got on the board with a one-out double. But with the tying run on second, Donovan (1-0) got a flyout and groundout to come away with his first career complete game. He walked one and struck out seven – one shy of his career-high.
O'Grady, Cody, and Posch all had two hits in the nightcap.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday, when it plays Mitchell College in a single game starting at 10 am.
