GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg and Susquehanna each scored the go-ahead runs in their final at bats en route to splitting a non-conference softball doubleheader at Bobby Jones Field on Thursday.
Gettysburg (8-7) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the opener 8-7. Susquehanna (12-8) returned the favor in the nightcap, bringing across two runs in the top of the seventh en route to a 3-2 decision.
Senior
Adrienne Rahs and freshman
Melissa Tighe led Gettysburg offensively on the day. Rahs posted four hits, scored two runs, and drove in three. She was also hit by a pitch for the 19th time in her career, breaking the program's all-time record and she connected on two doubles, leaving her just two shy of Gettysburg's career record of 36. Tighe reached base five times via three hits and two walks and scored twice.
The Crusaders opened the day in strong fashion, posting three runs in their first at bat and adding two more in the third to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Bullets broke into the scoring column in the home half of the third as Rahs plated the first run with a sacrifice fly and senior
Catrina DelGais drove in the second with a single through the right side.
The hosts answered another Susquehanna run in the fourth with two more tallies in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a perfectly placed bunt by Tighe to bring in the runner from third. Gettysburg sliced the deficit to one with another run in the fifth, but the Crusaders came right back in the top of the sixth to load the bases. The visitors brought in one run via a hit-by-pitch, but freshman
Lindsey Treanor got out the jam by getting Lisa Finizio to foul out to third base.
Gettysburg wasted no time getting back on top in its final at bat as Tighe singled to start the inning, stole second, and then came around to score on a double by Rahs to cut the lead to 7-6. The Bullets eventually loaded the bases and junior
Sam Bader came through with a two-run single to give Gettysburg the lead for the first and last time.
Susquehanna threated in its final at bat, but senior
Lanie Parr shut the door with the final two outs to pick up the save.
Gettysburg pounded out 12 hits with Tighe, Rahs, DelGais, and Bader each recording two. Bader reached base in all four of her plate appearances, adding a pair of walks. Treanor earned the victory after giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out four in 5.2 innings of work.
Finizio and Sam LaCoe each went 3-for-4 for Susquehanna in game one, the latter driving in three runs.
Tighe and Rahs struck once again in the opening inning of the nightcap as the first-year drew a one-out walk and scored on the senior's double to left field. Rahs later scored on a sacrifice fly by DelGais to spot Gettysburg a 2-0 lead.
Parr allowed only one run through the first six innings, including working out of a jam in the fifth. The Crusaders loaded the bases, but Lauren Gilbert's hot shot to third was gobbled up by sophomore
Maggie Maguire for the force out.
Susquehanna finally solved Parr in the seventh as Finizio started the rally with her seventh hit of the doubleheader. Brianna Murphy followed up with a hard liner off of Parr's leg. The Bullets hurler powered through the pain to remain on the mound, but back-to-back hit-by-pitches brought in the tying run. Madison Clark capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to right to score the go-ahead run.
Tighe doubled down the left-field line with two outs in the seventh, but Allison Cullen got Rahs to hit a lazy fly to right to end the game.
Rahs and freshman
Emily Hall each went 2-for-3, while Tighe added a hit and two walks. Parr took the loss despite allowing just three earned runs on eight hits and striking out six.
Cullen earned the win after giving up two runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Finizio was a perfect 4-for-4 with two singles, a double, and a triple in the nightcap.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, March 31, with a Centennial Conference doubleheader at home against Swarthmore College at 1 p.m.
