GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Joy Hallfors plated the game-winning run with an infield single to complete a seventh-inning rally in a 9-8 victory for Gettysburg against visiting Muhlenberg College in the teams' first game on Sunday. The Bullets had to settle for a split, however, as the rally fell short in a 7-6 loss in the nightcap.

Gettysburg (11-8, 3-1 CC) trailed 8-2 in the opening game before posting seven runs on eight hits in its final at bat to pick up the win. Sophomore Brooke Kalman started the rally with a lead-off single and Hallfors followed with her first hit of the inning. The Bullets continued to smash the ball as freshmen Melissa Tighe and Emily Hall each posted run-scoring singles sandwiched around a sacrifice fly by senior Adrienne Rahs to cut the deficit to 8-5 with one out.

The hosts worked the bases loaded and sophomore Abby Ferguson provided a big blow with a double over the left fielder's head to plate two more runs. With runners on second and third, junior Katie Lang hit a grounder to first base which brought across the tying run. However, Lang managed to knock the ball out of the first baseman's glove on the tag to put two runners on with just one out.

Following a ground out by Kalman, Hallfors stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and slapped a ball into the ground. Relief pitcher Heather Porrini fielded the ball cleanly, but the speedy center fielder beat the toss to first as the game-winning run crossed home plate.

The two teams combined for 30 hits in the opening game with the hosts knocking out 14. Sophomore Maggie Maguire went 2-for-2 with a walk, while Hallfors, senior Catrina DelGais, Ferguson, and Kalman each tallied two hits. Ferguson drove in a career-high four runs for the Bullets.

Kelly Kline led a 16-hit barrage by the visitors with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate. She drove in three runs and Colleen O'Donnell plated two runs with three hits.

Game two went by nearly the same script as Muhlenberg (9-11, 4-2 CC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four innings. Gettysburg broke into the scoring column in the sixth as junior Sam Bader tripled in a run and then scored on a ground-out by Ferguson.

The same lineup that sparked the rally in game one started the final at bat for the Bullets. Four consecutive singles by Hallfors, Tighe, Rahs, and DelGais cut the deficit to 7-4. Two more runs crossed the plate after Porrini entered the game in relief as a grounder by Ferguson was mishandled by the second baseman. The rally ended one batter later as freshman Alexa Katz lined out to second base.

Bader went 3-for-4 in the nightcap, while Tighe and Ferguson each went 2-for-4.

Chelsea Benjamin drove in three runs on three hits for the Mules. Kline added two more hits and Alyssa Schell finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Gettysburg welcomes Hood College to Bobby Jones Field on Tuesday, April 3, at 3 p.m.
