BALTIMORE – Sophomore Drew Felsenthal held Johns Hopkins to one run over 8 2/3 innings and Gettysburg defeated the Centennial Conference-leading Blue Jays 6-1 Friday afternoon JHU Baseball Diamond.

Johns Hopkins (17-9-2, 8-2 CC) loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but freshman Brett Harrington induced a game-ending flyout to center.

The win gave the Bullets (15-10, 4-6 CC) their first victory at Johns Hopkins since 1999, snapping a 12-game losing streak at JHU. It was also the Bullets first win over Johns Hopkins since 2009, ending a five-game skid versus the Blue Jays and giving them a season series split. Hopkins defeated the Bullets 11-5 on Tuesday in Gettysburg.

Felsenthal (4-1) won his third consecutive start while working the longest outing of his collegiate career. He scattered eight hits – all singles – and fired a career-high seven strikeouts while tossing 144 pitches. It was also the third straight start that he worked at least eight innings.

Sophomore Austin Davis had another big day at the plate, going 4-for-5 while reaching on three infield singles. He has now recorded four hits in three of his last five games. Davis also had three stolen bases, the most since Mike Backus '10 also swiped three bags in 2007.

Sophomore Nate Simon finished 3-for-4 with a double for Gettysburg while freshman Cory Karagjozi went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Mike Kanen went 3-for-5 for Johns Hopkins, which saw its five-game winning streak come to an end.

The Bullets jumped on Hopkins starter Lucas Henneman (2-3) with two runs in the first. Davis got things started when he led off the game with a single to short and stole second. He was singled home by Karagjozi, who scored three batters later on a single by freshman Scott Zanghellini.

Hopkins made it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the inning when Ryan Zakszeski drew a one-out bases-loaded walk. But Felsenthal bore down to get a strikeout and flyout to end the inning, then settled in to blank the Jays the rest of the way. He retired nine straight batters spanning the second through the fourth innings, and he did not allow a hit from the third through the sixth.

Felsenthal played the role of Houdini down the stretch, when he left a runner on base in each of his last four full innings. He got the first two outs in the fifth but then issued a pair of walks. However, he escaped by getting Zakszeski to fly out to right. He retired the first two again in the sixth but allowed another two-out walk. The No. 9 hitter then attempted to reach on a bunt but rolled out to first.

Felsenthal faced his stiffest challenge in the seventh, when he yielded a pair of singles to start the inning with the heart of the order coming up. However, he retired the side against the Blue Jays 3-4-5 hitters.

The hosts put runners on first and second in the eighth, getting a leadoff single and a two-out walk, but Felsenthal worked his magic once again, getting leadoff hitter Kyle Neverman to fly out.

In the meantime, the Bullets pushed their lead to five, getting single runs in the fourth and sixth and two in the seventh. Davis was the catalyst again in the fourth, when with two outs he singled to second, stole a pair of bases, and scored on a single by Karagjozi. In the sixth, sophomore Patrick O'Grady led off with a double to left-center and went on to score on a passed ball.

Senior Clint O'Brien and Zanghellini led off the seventh with back-to-back singles and both would end up scoring. Sophomore Dan Budin drove in O'Brien with a single, and Karagjozi drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Zanghellini.

Felsenthal recorded the first out in the ninth before No. 3 hitter Aaron Borenstein singled. He was one out from a complete game after Jeff Lynch flew out, but he hit Zakszeski, prompting a pitching change from head coach John Campo. Harrington then allowed a single that loaded the bases before Richie Carbone flew out to end it.

Gettysburg continues its Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, when it hosts Muhlenberg College in a pair of nine-inning games starting at 12:30 p.m.
