WESTMINSTER, Md. – The best hitting team in the Centennial Conference found itself at the mercy of the best pitching staff as Gettysburg College managed just four hits in a pair of losses at McDaniel College on Saturday.
McDaniel (20-8, 12-2 CC) moved closer to securing the top seed and the right to host the conference playoffs in two weeks by knocking off Gettysburg (18-13, 9-5 CC) 9-0 and 2-0. The Bullets dropped into a tie for third with Ursinus College in the conference standings with only two games left.
Gettysburg came into the weekend hitting a robust .348, but that didn't bother McDaniel's ace Caroline Brehm. Brehm, who improved to 16-6, allowed only four hits and one walk, while striking out 20 Bullets in the sweep.
Junior
Katie Lang and sophomore
Abby Ferguson each went 2-for-4 for the Bullets. Ferguson recorded Gettysburg's only extra-base hit with a lead-off double in the fifth inning of game one, but Brehm picked up two strikeouts and a pop-up to close the game.
After Lang's second base knock of the day in the third inning of game two, Brehm retired the final 15 batters she faced, including seven by strikeout.
McDaniel used the longball to wrap up the five-inning victory in game one as Amy Baumgardner blasted a grand slam in the third inning and Erinne Warrenfeltz ended the contest with a three-run shot in the fifth.
The offensive trend continued for the hosts in the nightcap with Jordan Beans hitting a two-run home run in the first inning for the only runs of the game.
Freshman
Lindsey Treanor suffered her first loss in conference play despite pitching well in the nightcap. She allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two.
Gettysburg takes a break from conference play to face Elizabethtown College on Tuesday, April 24, at 3 p.m.
