GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Maggie Maguire picked an opportune time to connect on her first home runs of the spring as her eighth-inning blast to right field capped a thrilling sweep of visiting Ursinus College in Centennial Conference softball action at Bobby Jones Field.
Gettysburg (14-9, 5-1 CC) and Ursinus (12-11, 2-4 CC) battled to extra innings in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader and it was Maguire who put an end to both games. In the first contest, the sophomore drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to lift the hosts to a 7-6 victory. Maguire struck emphatically to close the nightcap, belting her second home run of the game for an 8-6 decision.
The two annual conference playoff contenders traded blows in the opening game with Gettysburg managing to jump ahead 6-5 on a two-run double by Maguire in the sixth inning. The Bears came back in their next at bat as Allison Pformmer singled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a double by Kelly Schmanski to tie the game.
The Bullets just missed ending the game in the eighth as freshman
Alexa Katz tried to score from second on a single by junior
Sam Bader through the right side. Katz was gunned down at the plate by the right fielder to keep the game alive.
In the ninth, Gettysburg put a pair of runners on base with the heart of the order coming to the plate and two outs on the board. Senior
Adrienne Rahs worked the count full against Caitlin Whelan before getting hit by a pitch. Maguire followed up with a walk to force the game-winning run across home plate.
Freshman
Melissa Tighe went 3-for-3 with three walks and three runs scored at the top of Gettysburg's lineup. Junior
Joy Hallfors, Bader, and sophomore
Brooke Kalman each posted a pair of base knocks.
Senior
Lanie Parr threw all nine innings to earn the victory. She allowed six runs (two earned) on 11 hits and three walks, while striking out three.
Pfrommer and Schymanski each posted three hits for Ursinus in the first game.
Both teams started hot in the nightcap with Gettysburg answering an opening run by the visitors with three in the home half of the first. Rahs brought across the first run with a double to left-center and Bader and junior
Katie Lang each posted RBI singles.
The Bears tied the contest at 3-3 on a two-run single by Abby Sido in the third frame. Maguire answered the call in the next inning, lifting her first home run of the spring over the fence in center field to regain the lead.
Once again, Gettysburg held the lead going into the seventh inning, but Ursinus rallied with two outs as Kelsey Coyne tied the game with a two-run triple to right field.
In the eighth, Schymanski set down each of the first two Gettysburg hitters. Rahs came through for the hosts with her second double of the game to the left-center field gap. Maguire, who set the program's single-season record with seven home runs last spring, stepped to the plate and delivered once again, smacking the ball over the right-field fence for the win.
Maguire went 3-for-4 with a walk, four runs scored, and three RBI. Bader added three more hits and two RBI, while Rahs went 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Rahs also ended the day just one run and one RBI shy of reaching the century mark in each category for her career.
Freshman

Sido went 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI, while Nikki Djambinov and Schymanski each posted two hits for Ursinus.
