GETTYSBURG, Pa. – On any other day, it would have grabbed the headlines.
As it was, Gettysburg College men's basketball Head Coach
George Petrie was quite content to concede the spotlight.
On the same day that
Cory Weissman '12 made his stirring return to the basketball floor on Senior Day, Petrie moved past the legendary
Hen Bream '24 and into first on the program's all-time wins list
with his team's 83-69 victory over Washington College on a Saturday afternoon Feb. 11, marking top moment No. 3 in Gettysburg College athletics in 2011-12.
It was win No. 322 for Petrie, who broke a record that had stood for 57 years. Bream, one of the College's most revered figures who bears the name of Gettysburg's home gymnasium, was 321-205 from 1927-55. Petrie, who took over at Gettysburg in 1989-90, is now 323-276.
The Bullets and Shoremen were tied 36-all at halftime before the Orange & Blue broke it open with a 13-0 run midway through the second half and never looked back.
After the game Petrie was handed the game ball, but he didn't think twice before handing it over to Weissman. Just moments earlier, Weissman has connected on a free throw – the first and only point of his collegiate career – in his first game since suffering a stroke as a freshman. Weissman's inspiring story galvanized the campus community and sparked a flurry of major media coverage.
Four days later, Petrie was
recognized prior to the team's final home of the season versus Dickinson College. He was presented a game ball by President Janet Morgan Riggs '77, Bream's granddaughter, Wendy Stoner, and great-grandson, Danny Stoner, as well as local residents Ned Brownley '53 and Bob O'Brien '51, who each played basketball under Bream.
Petrie has made an indelible mark on the Gettysburg men's basketball program, leading the Bullets to all five of their appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament, including a Sweet 16 berth in 2008. He has also coached Gettysburg to three Centennial Conference championships, including back-to-back titles in 2001-02, and 11 consecutive appearances in the Centennial Conference playoffs from 2001-11.
