Bullets Fall in Five Twice at Hollins

Emory & Henry, Virginia Wesleyan edge Gettysburg

ROANOKE, Va. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team went the distance twice on the opening day of the Hollins College Tournament, but the Bullets came up empty against Emory & Henry College and Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday.
 
Gettysburg (2-4) opened the day with a marathon match against Emory & Henry (6-1). After splitting the first two sets, the Bullets winning the opener 25-18 and the Wasps taking the second 25-21, the two teams battled well past the required winning point total with Emory & Henry pulling out a 33-31 victory. It was Gettysburg's highest-scoring affair in a set since a 34-32 win over McDaniel College in 2007 (sets played to 30 points). The Bullets bounced back with a 25-15 win in the fourth frame, but the Wasps held on for a 16-14 decision in the decisive set.
 
Junior Sarah Gorski led Gettysburg with 15 kills and a career-high eight total blocks. Classmates Kelly Milione and Courtney Cyr turned in career performances on the attack, the former knocking down a personal-best 13 kills and the latter tying a personal mark with 11 kills. Milione also set a career-high with 17 digs to go with four assists and three service aces.
 
Senior Katie Wilson and freshman Hannah Bentz combined for 32 digs out of the back row, while junior Lizzy Kuhn and freshman Kate DeLess combined for 39 assists.
 
Gettysburg fell in five sets to Virginia Wesleyan (5-2) despite taking a 2-1 lead. After the Marlins won the opening set 25-18, the Bullets took the next two 25-19 and 25-22. Virginia Wesleyan closed strong with 25-12 and 15-6 decisions. No statistics were available at press time.
 
Gettysburg continues play at Hollins with matches against the hosts and Virginia Intermont College on Saturday. The Bullets face Hollins at noon and Virginia Intermont at 2 p.m.
