GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College head softball coach
Samantha Abrams has been named the new head softball coach at Centennial Conference rival Ursinus College it was recently announced.
Abrams leaves Gettysburg after five seasons as the head softball coach and assistant volleyball coach. She was also an assistant coach with the softball program in 2006-07.
"We are pleased to have someone with as an experienced background as Sam on board," said Ursinus College Athletic Director
Laura Moliken in a news release. "Her familiarity with the Centennial Conference and her success at Gettysburg will help our program grow."
Abrams tenure at Gettysburg was a successful one. In five seasons she compiled a record of 101-78-2, including 46-33-1 in Centennial play. She led the team to three 20-win seasons and three appearances in the league playoffs. In 2010, Abrams was tabbed the CC Coach of the Year after guiding the Bullets to a runner-up showing in the conference regular-season standings. As an assistant coach in 2007, she helped the Bullets claim the Centennial Conference title.
Twenty-seven players have garnered all-conference recognition since Abrams took on head coaching duties, including 13 first-team selections. Additionally, five student-athletes have been named All-East Region, four have landed Academic All-District honors, and one has been named an Academic All-American.
“I will miss the players, my assistants, and fellow co-workers, all of whom have given me a tremendous amount of support throughout my years at Gettysburg,” said Abrams. “I would especially like to thank Dave Wright and
Mike Kirkpatrick for believing in my coaching ability and entrusting me with the Gettysburg softball program. I will be forever grateful.”
Abrams' connection to Gettysburg runs deeper than just being a member of the staff. In January, she wed 2007 alum Mark Campo, son of long-time Bullets' baseball coach
John Campo.
Prior to her coaching career, Abrams was a star on the softball diamond at McDaniel College. She was a four-time All-CC selection and was named the CC Player of the Year in 2003. Abrams led the Green Terror to a pair of conference titles and an overall record of 109-34 during her tenure as a player.
Abrams takes the reins of a traditionally strong program in the Centennial Conference. Ursinus has claimed five conference titles, including most recently in 2008. Last spring, the Bears went 23-18 and finished tied for third in the conference standings with a 10-6 record.
With the start of the softball season less than two weeks away, Gettysburg Director of Athletics
David Wright has announced assistant coach
Ashley Mowery will take over the Bullets' softball program as interim head coach. Mowery, who is also the assistant field hockey coach, is entering her second season at Gettysburg.
