WESTMINSTER, Md. – Freshman guard
Sango Amolo (Fall Church, Va./McLean) tied a season-high with 17 points and Gettysburg used a big second half to win 72-56 at McDaniel College in Centennial Conference men's basketball action Wednesday evening at the Gill Center.
The Bullets (10-8, 6-5 CC), who have won eight of their last 10 games, momentarily pulled into sole possession of fifth place in the conference. Gettysburg entered the night tied for fifth with Ursinus, which took on Muhlenberg College in an 8 p.m. start. The top-five teams in the conference qualify for the conference playoffs.
Sophomore
Joe Emerusabe (Derwood, Md./Magruder) added a season-high 16 points off the bench for the Bullets while senior
Alex Zurn (Brookeville, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) tossed in 12 points. He is now 19 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
Senior
Derek Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) contributed a strong all-around game for Gettysburg with 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, and a career-high five steals.
Andrew Merlo scored a game-high 20 points to go with six rebounds for McDaniel (10-8, 4-7 CC).
The Green Terror led for nearly the entire first half and outscored the Bullets 16-7 to open the game. However, Gettysburg rallied with an 11-2 run to take its first lead of the night when Emerusabe canned a 3-pointer with 9:14 on the clock to make it 20-18.
Amolo scored four in a row and tied it at 28-all following a jumper at the 3:12 mark. Senior center
Christian Bors (Lanham, Md./Sidwell Friends [D.C.]) dropped in a lay-up with 1:50 showing for the final points of the half, and the Bullets trailed 31-30 at the intermission.
Gettysburg came out hot in the second half, opening on a 10-2 run to assume a 40-33 lead, getting baskets from five different players along the way. After McDaniel drew to within three, the Orange and Blue broke it open with a 13-2 run, capped by a conventional 3-point play from Emerusabe to make it 55-41 with 10:33 left. The Terror were able to cut the deficit under 10 just once the rest of the way, and the Bullets reached their largest lead when a lay-up from Amolo gave the visitors a 71-52 advantage with 47 seconds to go.
The Bullets out-rebounded their opponent for the sixth game in a row, holding a 32-28 advantage on the glass. Gettysburg also limited McDaniel to 37.0 percent shooting, marking the eighth time this season the Bullets held an opponent to sub-40 percent.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, when it visits Swarthmore College in another Centennial Conference match-up beginning at 3 p.m.
