GETTYSBURG, Pa. – A late 12-0 Gettysburg run broke open a close game as the Bullets defeated Washington College 69-53 in a Centennial Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon in Bream Gymnasium.
Senior
Alex Zurn (Brookeville, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) scored 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting for Gettysburg (6-7, 2-4 CC), which shot a season-high 62.8 percent from the field – the team's best mark since shooting 63.6 percent in a victory over York (Pa.) College on Nov. 27, 2011. The Bullets scored 40 of their points in the paint.
Zurn also had three steals to push his career total to 94, which ties for 10th in school history.
Senior
Derek Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) contributed 12 points and five assists while junior forward
Connor Poston (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) – making his first collegiate start – scored a career-high 10 points to go with six rebounds. Freshman guard
Sango Amolo (Falls Church, Va./McLean) added nine points a season-high seven assists while senior center
Benjamin Constable (Christchurch, New Zealand) posted eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Charlie McShane shot 4-for-8 from 3-point range and scored 22 points for Washington (0-13, 0-6 CC).
The Bullets, who out-rebounded the Shoremen 33-21, led for most of the afternoon. Gettysburg opened up an early five-point advantage, but a 6-0 Washington run gave the visitors their first lead (18-17) with 8:58 left in the opening period.
One tie and four lead changes would ensue over the next 6:39, with the Bullets taking the lead for good on a Poston free throw with 2:19 left that made it 32-31. The shot was the start of an 8-0 Gettysburg run to end the half, with Zurn capping the surge with a 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining.
Zurn led all scorers with 13 points at the half in which Gettysburg shot a red-hot 72.7 percent (16-for-22).
Washington drew as close as four in the second half, and it was a 52-47 game with 12:41 showing following a McShane trey. However, that's when the Bullets used their decisive 12-0 run to pull away. Sophomore center
Christian Healy (Reading, Mass./Belmont Hill) kick-started the outburst with a driving lay-up at the 10:44 mark, and over five minutes later Zurn capped it with a step-back 3-pointer from the left corner to make it 64-47, prompting a Washington timeout. The Bullets lead reached 20 before the Shoremen scored the last four points.
Gettysburg resumes its Centennial Conference schedule on Tuesday, when it visits Ursinus College at 8 p.m.
