GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Georgia Ferguson (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) scored the game-winning goal and the Gettysburg College women's soccer team broke the school record for shutouts in a season, defeating Centennial Conference (CC) foe Franklin & Marshall College 1-0 on Senior Night at Clark Field.
With the win, its fifth in a row, Gettysburg (12-1-3, 7-1-1 CC) maintained its hold on first place in the conference standings in terms of points. The Bullets can now clinch first place and the right to host the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs with a win over sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins University in their regular-season finale at Clark Field Saturday night at 7:00.
Gettysburg's seven seniors were honored in a brief ceremony prior to the start of the match.
The Bullets have now worked 12 shutouts this season, surpassing the previous mark that was held by the 2004 team.
In the 77th minute, junior
Mary Kamovitch (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) set up Ferguson's game-winner, rolling a pass into the box from the left wing. Ferguson buried a shot into the right side of the net for her team-leading seventh goal of the season while Kamovitch picked up her second career assist and her first since Oct. 17 of last season.
It was the second match in a row that Ferguson provided all of the offense for Gettysburg, as she also scored both goals in the team's 2-0 victory at Muhlenberg this past Saturday.
The Bullets did not allow a shot the rest of the way, and yielded just three the entire night. Sophomore
Eliza Gray (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) made two saves to earn her eighth shutout of the year.
Defense controlled the tempo in the first half, as each side attempted just two shots. F&M (5-6-3, 3-3-2 CC) had the best look at the goal in the 37th minute, when Brianna Reid took a pass off an indirect kick and, from inside the box, had her shot ring off the left post.
Gray made a stop on a header by Nicole Rynecki in the eighth minute, and McGowan hauled in a blast from senior
Rachel West (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) at the top of the box in the 24th minute.
In the second half, Ferguson had a pair of excellent looks at the goal prior to her game-winner. But her header in the 68th minute was wide right, and she missed high less than a minute later.
The Bullets were held to seven shots, with Amanda McGowan making three saves for the Diplomats.
