GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg jumped to a 2-0 lead over Centennial Conference-leading Franklin & Marshall College, but the visiting Diplomats rallied to win the final three sets and escape with a 3-2 volleyball victory Wednesday night in Bream Gymnasium.
The Bullets opened with 25-20 and 25-18 victories before the Diplomats won 28-26, 25-14, and 15-11.
Sophomore
Courtney Morrow (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) threw down a career-high 14 kills for the Bullets (13-12, 5-3 CC), who now find themselves tied with Johns Hopkins University for fourth place in the Centennial Conference (CC) standings with two league matches left. The top-five teams qualify for the CC playoffs.
Morrow made just two errors on 26 attempts, good for a .462 hitting night. She also had five blocks (three solo) and four aces.
Sophomore
Alesha Miller (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) added 12 digs and six aces for Gettysburg while senior
Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) added 32 assists and eight digs.
Four players finished in double figures in kills for Franklin & Marshall (21-4, 8-0 CC), including Katie Foreman, Ellie Ezekiel, and Emily Gerard, who had 15 kills apiece. Ezekiel added 12 digs to finish with a double-double while Julie Harvey posted 11 kills. Caroline Hubbard handed out 50 assists.
The Bullets trailed just once in the opening two sets while building their 2-0 lead. Gettysburg trailed by four early in the third set, but came back to take the lead late. The Bullets were serving for the match at 25-24, but Gerard kept the Diplomats in it with a kill, and eventually Harvey and Ezekiel posted back-to-back kills to clinch the set for F&M.
Gettysburg jumped to a 4-0 lead in the final set but the Diplomats climbed back into it with a 5-1 run. F&M then pulled away with a 6-2 run to make it 11-7, and the Bullets were unable to get closer than two the rest of the way.
The Orange and Blue returns to the court on Sunday, when they visit Stevenson University with Virginia Wesleyan College in a non-conference tri-match. The Bullets take on Stevenson at 11 a.m. and Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
