GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman
Samantha Wright (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored the game-winning goal with 1:49 left and the Gettysburg College field hockey team rallied to beat Swarthmore College 4-3 in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon at a hot Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
With the win, the Bullets (5-4, 1-3 CC) picked up their first Centennial Conference victory of the season. Swarthmore (2-9, 0-5 CC) suffered its fifth-straight loss.
The Garnet led 1-0 at the half but was outscored 4-2 in the second period.
Senior
Erica Barbuto (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) recorded a goal and two assists for Gettysburg while Nia Jones and Erin Gluck notched one goal and one assist apiece for Swarthmore. Gabby Capone made 11 saves for the Garnet while senior
Alexis Bralow (Philadelphia, Pa./Harriton) stopped five shots for the Bullets.
Gettysburg trailed 2-0 early in the second half and 3-2 with 17:09 remaining. But with 16:11 to go, on in a scramble in front of the cage junior
Kellyann Walley (Northport, N.Y./Northport) took a pass from Barbuto and pushed in her fourth goal of the season, making it 3-3.
The Bullets held off the Garnet on four corners over the next 10 minutes while Bralow made a save during the stretch. Then with 1:49 showing, freshman
Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) delivered a pass from the left elbow to the right post, where Wright punched in her third goal of the season and her second game-winner.
Swarthmore had one final chance, earning a corner with 38 seconds left, but Bralow turned aside a shot and a Bullet defender was able to clear the ball near midfield as time expired.
The two sides each took seven shots in the first half in an evenly-played period. Both goalies also made four saves in the stanza, but the Garnet broke through on a penalty corner with just over a minute to play. Abigail Lauder sent her corner pass to a waiting Aarti Rao at the top of the circle, and she flicked a pass to Anne Rosenblatt on her left. Rosenblatt ripped a shot into the left side of the cage with 1:03 on the clock for her second goal of the season.
Jones put the Garnet up 2-0 seven minutes into the second half, but the Bullets got on the scoreboard just over two minutes later. Standing in front of the goal, Barbuto took a pass from senior
Liz Baron (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) and evaded the goalie with a spin move before depositing her team-leading seventh goal of the year to make it 2-1.
The Bullets pulled even with 18:50 left, when Barbuto gathered in a rebound and rolled a pass to senior
Kelly Spieker (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), who drilled in her third goal of the season. But Swarthmore went back in front when Gluck scored on a breakaway, taking a cross from Jones with 17:09 left.
Gettysburg outshot Swarthmore 20-15 and held an 11-9 edge in corners.
The Bullets continue their five-game homestand on Tuesday, when they host Shenandoah University at 4:30 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the regular season.
