GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team closed out the regular season in dramatic fashion and the Bullets will look to carry that momentum into the first round of the Centennial Conference playoffs.
Needing a victory on the final day of the regular season, Gettysburg (14-15, 6-4 CC) put it all together for a 3-2 decision over visiting McDaniel College inside Bream Gym. The win clinched the fifth and final spot in the conference playoffs. It was a well-rounded team effort with 58 kills, 51 assists, 69 digs, and 12 total blocks. Four players logged 11 or more kills, while three went for a dozen or more digs.
"They were very excited to come out with a win for their final home match and on senior day," said Head Coach
Leah Bernier. "During our pre-game chat, we talked about our game plan and then decided that win or lose, we do it together."
Gettysburg will face Johns Hopkins University (11-12, 7-3 CC) in the opening round on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. inside Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays downed the Bullets in three sets on Oct. 30.
The winner of Wednesday's affair will advance to the semifinals to face top seed and championship host Franklin & Marshall College (24-5, 10-0 CC) on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. The other semifinal will pit Muhlenberg College (19-11, 8-2 CC) against McDaniel (19-6, 7-3 CC) at 3:30 p.m. Sunday's championship match is set for 1 p.m.
Gettysburg is the Centennial Conference's most decorated program with 11 championships from 1994 to 2005. The Bullets will need to continue to ride the wave of momentum produced from the last victory over McDaniel if the eight-year drought is to end this fall.
"If this team can focus on their individual jobs on the court and give 100 percent effort on every point, they can see it through to the end," said Bernier.
