GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg erased an eight-point second-half deficit, but Dickinson outscored the Bullets 5-0 in the final 2:32 and the Centennial Conference-leading Red Devils escaped with a 61-58 victory Wednesday evening in Bream Gymnasium.
The Bullets had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but sophomore
Joe Emerusabe (Derwood, Md./Magruder) missed a 3-pointer from the left elbow. Emerusabe hit the floor after his shot was contested before Dickinson rebounded as time expired.
The nip-and-tuck battle featured 10 ties and seven lead changes.
The Bullets (12-12, 8-9 CC) now find themselves tied with Ursinus College for fifth place in the Centennial Conference standings with one game remaining.
Dickinson (18-6, 13-4 CC) remained tied with Franklin & Marshall College for first place in the Centennial Conference standings.
Freshman guard
Sango Amolo (Falls Church, Va./McLean) led all players with 16 points for the Bullets while senior center
Christian Bors (Lanham, Md./Sidwell Friends [D.C.]) added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go with five rebounds and four steals. Both players scored 14 points in the second half.
Senior
Derek Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) contributed 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists while Emerusabe notched a career-high nine rebounds to go with six points and four assists. Making his first collegiate start, freshman
Brent Slotoroff (Linwood, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) posted seven points, nine rebounds, and two blocks.
Adam Honig and Chris Barsanti scored 15 points apiece for the Red Devils.
Brooks dropped in a lay-up off a beautiful back-door pass from Bors to put Gettysburg in front 58-56 with 2:32 left. However, Tucker Landy converted a conventional 3-point play at the other end to put Dickinson up by one with 2:13 to go.
Amolo missed a pair of free throws with 2:00 showing before the two teams exchanged turnovers. Dickinson called timeout with 48 seconds left after a steal by Brandon Angradi, and Brooks pulled down a rebound to give the Bullets possession. But Amolo missed a contested lay-up in transition before Landy knocked down a pair of crucial foul shots with 11 ticks showing, setting up Emerusabe's attempt coming out of a Gettysburg timeout.
Neither team led by more than four for most of the first half, and a jumper from Brooks pulled the Bullets to within with 3:18 remaining. But 3-pointers from Angradi and Barsanti gave the Red Devils a 28-21 heading into the locker room.
A lay-up from Barsanti gave Dickinson its eight-point lead (30-22) with 19:06 remaining. But that's when the Bullets used an 11-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Bors and a lay-up by Amolo, to go in front 33-32 with 15:02 left. Gettysburg would lead for most of the next 13 minutes before Dickinson's late run.
The Bullets conclude the regular season on Saturday, when they host McDaniel College at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.
