FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the second time in six days, senior
Ryan Taylor (Eldersburg, Md./Loyola Blakefield) and junior
Drew Felsenthal (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) went the distance on the mound, leading the Gettysburg College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran College on the next-to-last day of the squad's Spring Break trip to Florida.
Taylor did not allow an earned run and scattered seven hits in the opener, a 14-1 Gettysburg victory, while becoming just the fourth pitcher in school history to reach 200 career strikeouts. Felsenthal spun a four-hitter as the Bullets prevailed 7-1 in the nightcap. Both pitchers struck out eight.
Junior
Patrick O'Grady (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) finished 3-for-7 with six RBIs to lead Gettysburg (7-3) at the plate while senior
Pat Cody (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) was 4-for-7 with four runs scored.
The Bullets backed Taylor with 11 hits, including three triples. Taylor took the hill with a 5-0 lead after Gettysburg scored five times on three hits, two walks, and an error in the top of the first, which included a triple by O'Grady and a double by junior
Tommy LeNoir (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy).
Gettysburg added another five-spot in the third, when two errors led to all the runs being unearned. The Bullets ran their lead to 13-0 in the fourth, when Cody legged out a three-bagger, and scored their final run in the sixth when junior
Ben Roessle (Summit, N.J./Summit) tripled in a run.
In the meantime, Taylor (2-0) kept the Warriors off the scoreboard until the seventh. He allowed the first two batters he faced to reach but turned a 1-6-3 double play before getting out of it with a groundout. He retired the side in order in the second and sixth but allowed a leadoff double in the seventh, which would go on to score following a two-out error.
Taylor, who hit the 200-strikeout mark with his sixth punch-out of the game, joins Brian Golden (310, 1985-88), Richard Hawkins (229, 1958-60), and Marc Favieri (226, 1987-90) on Gettysburg's 200 club.
O'Grady finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs in the opener while Cody went 3-for-4 with three runs. Roessle was 2-for-2 with three RBIs while LeNoir had two hits and two runs.
Gettysburg posted its third five-run inning in the third inning of the nightcap. Juniors
Al Posch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) sandwiched RBI-singles around a run-scoring double by Cody. A costly Warrior error made four of the runs unearned.
An O'Grady two-run single in the fourth capped the scoring for the Bullets, but it was more than enough offense for Felsenthal (3-0). He blanked the Warriors on one hit through the first five innings, ended the second with a pickoff at first, and induced an inning-ending double play in the fourth. After fanning the side in the fifth, he yielded his only run on a pair of singles and a groundout in the sixth.
Sophomore
Cory Karagjozi (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) finished 2-for-3 at the plate in Game Two.
Gettysburg wraps up its Spring Break trip when it takes on Lawrence University in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
