SALEM, Va. – The Gettysburg College softball team picked up its sixth-consecutive win against Castleton College before the streak was checked by No. 23 Roanoke College on the opening day of the Roanoke Valley College Softball Blast on Friday.
Gettysburg (6-5) scored the final eight runs to dispatch Castleton (0-6) 8-2 in its first game. Roanoke (12-4) ended the Bullets' winning ways by scoring in each of its at bats en route to a 17-6 decision.
After a scoreless two-and-a-half innings of play, Castleton jumped on the board with two unearned runs in the bottom of the third. The Bullets answered in their next at bat as freshman
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) hit a solo home run, her third long-ball of the spring, and senior
Sam Bader (York, Pa./Central York) doubled in a pair of runs with two outs.
Gettysburg brought across four more runs in the fifth with junior
Brooke Kalman (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest) and senior
Katie Lang (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) chipping in with a run-scoring double and a two-run single, respectively.
The Spartans had no answer offensively, managing just two base-runners over the final four innings. Senior
Taylor Snyder (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) recorded the win after throwing the first four innings and allowing two unearned runs on three hits. Sophomore
Lindsey Treanor (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) struck out three over the final three innings to pick up her first collegiate save.
Zengel finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Kalman was 2-for-3 with a walk, three runs, and one RBI, while Lang and Bader each went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Gettysburg struck for the opening run against Roanoke as sophomore
Ashley Iannone (Great Meadows, N.J./Blair Academy) singled in senior
Joy Hallfors (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) in the top of the first. The lead would be short-lived as the Maroons scored twice in the bottom of the inning before unleashing for 11 runs combined in the second and third frames.
The Bullets picked up three runs in the fourth inning as Tighe and Hallfors both reached base to start the inning. Roanoke would answer with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Iannone went 3-for-4, while Hallfors and sophomore
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) each posted a pair of hits. Hallfors and Tighe each scored a pair of runs.
Gettysburg resumes play at the Bash against Mount Aloysius College on Saturday, March 16, at 9 a.m.
